Familiar or not, this image does tease Superman's arrival in Gotham. The bleak surroundings kind of give it away. It leaves the curiosity of whether the next poster will be Batman in Metropolis.

Hans Zimmer to score Batman vs Superman project

There were a lot of mixed reviews on Man of Steel, but one consistent high point was the score composed by Hans Zimmer. Director Zack Snyder seems to want to recreate that magic as Zimmer has been confirmed to be composing the score for the upcoming Batman vs Superman project.

Previously, the theme to Superman belonged to the legendary John Williams. Zimmer was given the task to rewrite the theme and come up with a new score for Superman and he was pretty successful with his interesting take on Man of Steel. It was the second DC reinvention for Zimmer as he also scored Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. It also changed the pace for Snyder as he was a longtime collaborator with composer Tyler Bates.
There is no telling whether Zimmer will come up with a new Batman theme for this project or if he will carry over the Dark Knight musical elements. Either way this should prove to be very interesting.

Batman vs Superman is still in pre-production and Zimmer is currently composing Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. He also scored The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which you can see on May 2nd.

Casting news hits for Batman vs Superman

The release date changed, but WB is still moving forward with the untitled Batman vs Superman project. We got casting news today that the production has added Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, and Tao Okamoto. Prior to this, the last announcement we received was the addition of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.

There are no details about which characters these three will be playing, but there is word that they are new characters. Director Zack Snyder previously mentioned that casting is going off the script which is material fans don't know about, so having these three new spots goes along with that.
You might recognize the Oscar-winning Holly Hunter from films like The Incredibles, The Piano, Thirteen, and O Brother Where Art Thou and the television series Saving Grace. Callan Mulvey has most recently been seen in 300: Rise of an Empire and Tao Okamoto was opposite Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine.

Already cast in this project are Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, and Laurence Fishburne. The film is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016. As it stands it is set to compete against a third Captain America film, so I won't be surprised if the release date changes at least once more.

Jesse Eisenberg to play Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman

This is literally the funniest thing I have seen all week.

Jesse Eisenberg (or as I call him, Michael Cera 2.0) has been announced as the selection for Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman. Yes, the guy playing a wimpy virgin in just about every movie has been cast as one of the most iconic villains in the Superman arc and quite possibly in DC Comics history. In addition to Eisenberg's casting, we also learned that Jeremy Irons will be playing Bruce Wayne's trusted butler/guardian, Alfred.

There were a lot of rumors circling around Bryan Cranston for the role of Lex Luthor and I will admit it's just because he went bald for Breaking Bad and it just worked. However, given the age of Henry Cavill many are speculating that was reason enough to go for a younger Luthor as well. Jesse Eisenberg is in Cavill's age bracket and has somewhat proven himself to be cunning and scheming on screen. I am betting his roles in The Social Network and Now You See Me are the only reason he was even considered.
As for Jeremy Irons, director Zack Snyder explained the reasoning for getting an older actor is due to the fact that this is not a Batman origins story. At this point, Bruce Wayne is a seasoned veteran and is older so it makes sense to have his butler be older, too.


So what do you guys make of this? So far all I have seen online is my same reaction of laughter at seeing Eisenberg's picture next to Lex Luthor. I definitely did not see this one coming.

The untitled Batman vs. Superman project is slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.

Batman vs. Superman pushed to 2016

It looks like we will have to wait another year to see Ben Affleck as Batman. Warner Bros. announced an inevitable schedule change for the Man of Steel sequel. The "untitled" Batman vs. Superman project has shifted from July 17, 2015 to May 6, 2016. In place of the DC Comics film, the new reboot of Peter Pan has now taken the July 17th spot.

Batman vs. Superman will now be released in the same year as X-Men: Apocalypse and an untitled Marvel project rumored to be Doctor Strange. It also moves it just a year apart from the planned Justice League movie and the same year as the announced Flash film. Whether this will shift more DC movies as a chain reaction is still unknown but it's possible. I won't be surprised if they move Flash to 2017 and delay Justice League to 2018. Reasoning for the delay was cited as a creative issue. In order for the filmmakers to fully capture their vision they needed more time. This also moves the budget to the second quarter of the fiscal year, so they now have more money to spend on it. There also is a rumor that Ben Affleck recently injured himself, but that hasn't been confirmed.

I personally don't mind this. It takes some of the heat out of the 2015 year which is already ridiculously overcrowded. 

Batman vs. Superman budget set; more details revealed

Production is moving smoothly for Zack Snyder's sequel to Man of Steel. We have new behind the scenes details on the film including budget, filming location, and when filming is set to wrap up.

Michelle Grinnell, public relations for the Michigan Film Office, has stated that this film with have the state's biggest production since Oz The Great and Powerful. The budget has been set at $131 million and that's only for the Michigan location. That doesn't include other locations or post-production, so I am betting in the end the budget will surpass $131 million.
In addition to the budget, we learned that filming will take all seven sound studios at Michigan Motion Picture Studios and will utilize other locations in the state. The other location we know of right now is Yorkville, IL where production is building the Kent Farm. Filming is set to wrap in August.

The Best Movies of 2013

It is about that time again. This time we are talking the best movies of 2013.
Now, as always, I will only discuss the movies that I saw this year. I did miss some major movies this year that I might add if I see them before the end of the year. I also want to reiterate that this is all my personal opinion and are in no particular order. Deal with it.

Let's get started!


Side Effects

I feel like this movie didn't get enough attention. It was interesting, had a great cast (minus Channing Tatum), and had a great ending. I even watched it twice. If you didn't see it I would check it out.

Dark Skies

This was one that most people thought was really bad, but I enjoyed it. I thought the premise was somewhat unexpected and I appreciated that.

Evil Dead

I did have gripes with this movie, but overall it is one of the best horror movies we have received in years. As a reboot it wasn't that great, but as a stand alone movie it was fantastic. Great effects.

Antiviral

I went in not knowing what to expect. I did really like it, though. It was a very interesting concept and I like movies that stretch your brain a bit and make you think. By the end of the movie I just sat there and was like... that was really cool. Very appreciated.

Iron Man 3

Not the best Iron Man movie, but a decent attempt. The effects were good and the story kept you intrigued enough. Minus the confusion and outcry over the butchering of The Mandarin, I enjoyed this one enough to make this list and not the worst list. The way I see it, Iron Man 3 was better than Iron Man 2. That's all that matters in the end.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Great. It was just great. The effects, the acting, the story, and just everything was awesome. Benedict Cumberbatch stole the show and I loved it.

The Hangover Part III

Calm down, everyone. I put this one on this list because of a couple reasons. First, it was so much better than The Hangover Part II. Second, this movie actually had a story greater than the characters get hungover and try and trace their steps. It actually had a plot and some conflict but managed to stay true to the characters and stay funny. It was a pretty good movie in general, not just for a Hangover movie.

This is the End

I regret not seeing this in theaters. By far the funniest movie I have seen all year. If you thought it was going to be bad, pray for forgiveness and watch the movie.

Man of Steel

Similar to what I said about Iron Man 3, this one makes the list based on a couple reasons; General Zod being the biggest reason. Michael Shannon was fantastic and brought so much to the table. Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner also made this one for me. Granted it was full of overdone Zack Snyder effects and was basically all CGI, but it was a lot more enjoyable than I expected it to be.

Monsters University

I wasn't expecting much because it was a prequel, but I walked away with a smile. Good show, Pixar.

The Heat

Before I saw This is the End, this one was my funniest of 2013. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy need to do another comedy together. They were meant for each other.

V/H/S/2

This is on the list for the sheer fact that I saw the cult segment. It was just fantastic. I would have loved to see a full length movie on that subject. 

The Conjuring

Best horror film of the year. Maybe even the best of the decade. James Wan deserves all of the praise for this movie and went out of the genre with a bang. It was stressful, interesting, beautifully shot, and rather creepy. I loved every single second of this movie. Getting an R-rating for being "too scary" says it all. It lived up to the hype.

The Wolverine

It was better than X-Men Origins. That's all that is important.

Elysium

This one had a lot of problems, but based on concept and effects I decided to put it on here. It's worth seeing at least once.

Insidious: Chapter 2

I enjoyed this one as much, if not more, than the first one. James Wan delivered another quality product and it was terrifying.

Gravity

This is probably my #1 of the whole year. It was such a great movie. I hope it wins Best Picture.

Ender's Game

A decent book adaptation with fantastic special effects. I would check it out if you didn't.

Thor: The Dark World

Another quality Marvel release that was better than Iron Man 3. Just saying. It was better than Man of Steel, too.

Frozen

I put this on here for animation and animation only. I didn't like the movie as a whole all that much, but the animation was beautiful. The characters as a whole weren't bad either.

American Hustle

Funny, interesting, sad, happy, total package. I enjoyed this movie a lot. Kudos to David O. Russell for giving us another gem.

Gal Gadot cast as Wonder Woman

I'm a little late to the party, but it has been announced that Gal Gadot has been cast to play Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman. This confirms that Wonder Woman will be introduced in some way prior to Justice League in 2017 and somewhat backs up the theory that she will not be receiving her own movie.

Gadot is an Israeli born actress who is most recognizable from her work as Gisele in the Fast and Furious films. She also competed as Miss Israel in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant and served two years in the Israeli military. This will be her first major starring role and will no doubt be a recurring role. She beat out actresses such as Olga Kurylenko and Elodie Yung for the role of Wonder Woman.
Many are wondering the motivation behind casting Gadot as Wonder Woman and are hoping she isn't treated like Black Widow was in The Avengers. In other words, the basic consensus seems to be that people don't want her to just be a pretty face with minor support to the main heroes, Batman and Superman. She will also be sharing the screen with Amy Adams who was pretty lame in Man of Steel.

I personally think Wonder Woman is one of those comic heroes that is impossible to cast and/or portray correctly. I don't have much hope for this character at all so this doesn't bug me.

Possible official titles for Batman vs. Superman

Everyone has been referring to the Man of Steel sequel simply as Batman vs Superman. It's to the point and self explanatory. However, it isn't an official title. Warner Bros. has yet to release an official title for this project and everyone has just settled on the Batman vs. Superman name. However, there is word that WB has registered 8 potential titles for the project.

Fusible claims that the studio has gone to MarkMonitor, an internet brand protection company, to register these 8 titles just in case they want to use one of them. That doesn't guarantee one of them will be used, though. Some studios do it to prevent others from marketing on their brand. Also bear in mind that most of these titles make no sense.

Out of the given registries, I think the best ones are Knight Falls and Shadow of the Knight. All the other ones sound gimmicky and stupid. It is also worth mentioning that including any Dark Knight reference might be frowned upon in the end because it could create confusion with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. A trilogy WB has said the Man of Steel arc will have nothing to do with and will not follow. Due to that, my guesses are on any of the other titles, like The Blackest Hour, to make the final cut.

I'm still hoping for The World's Finest, but that might just be me. Whatever the title winds up being, the Man of Steel sequel is set for release on July 17, 2015.

Ben Affleck signed for multiple Batman appearances

We learned the other night that Ben Affleck has signed on to play Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, Batman vs. Superman. We now have information that Affleck has signed on for multiple films.

The reception has been overwhelmingly negative in regards to Affleck's casting. There was even a petition proposed to President Obama to make it illegal for Affleck to play Batman. The saddest part is it got over 5,000 signatures in less than 24-hours. However, Warner Bros. doesn't seem phased by the reception because Affleck has signed on for multiple films. I can only assume said multiples will include Justice League and at least one standalone Batman film. Who knows, he might even appear in the proposed movie for The Flash which is set to hit in 2016. Another possibility that the multiple movie deal isn't just acting. Affleck is a very talented director and has awards to prove it. I mention this because it was previously rumored that Affleck could be directing Justice League, so anything is possible.
We also have to bear in mind that his future as Batman will most likely depend on the reception of Batman vs. Superman, so we just have to be patient. If people hate it WB might can the whole thing and we may never get Justice League or The Flash. Everyone pull their panties out of their ass. 

In addition to the multiple movie deal, we got word that Batman vs. Superman will be entering production in February 2014 and will run all the way until August. That is an extremely long shoot but I suppose they need it if they're going to make the release date on time. Batman vs. Superman is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2015.

[Rumor] An older Batman sought after by Warner Bros.

We learned at San Diego Comic-Con a couple weeks ago that there will indeed be a Batman vs. Superman movie, but ever since then the speculation has been on for exactly who will play Batman. Christian Bale is out of the picture so where do we go from here?
So far what we know for sure is Zack Snyder will be directing and is currently working on the script with David S. Goyer and this will technically be the sequel to Man of Steel. However, rumors are flying that the studio is seeking an older actor to portray Batman to give him a more experienced look.

People are taking the fact that an excerpt from The Dark Knight Returns was read prior to the Superman/Batman logo reveal at Comic-Con as a sign that this will indeed happen and that Batman will return as a beat up veteran. Some are saying this is a smart move and that this would avoid yet another Batman origins story for a new, young Batman. However, allowing us to bypass an origins would mean it would have to rely on Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy for background and he has said that he wants the trilogy to be a standalone series. But Nolan is involved with Man of Steel, so it's not like he doesn't know what is going on.

Now if this is true, this limits the casting of Batman to a man in his late-30's to mid-40's. There is a lot of that in Hollywood, but would it really yield someone good? Only time will tell. And it needs to be a short amount of time so they can make that 2015 release date.

Idris Elba (Yeah, a black Batman)

When I think of "who should play Batman" I look at two key factors; who can handle the physical part along with playing a believable, suave billionaire. Out of the above choices I think the frontrunners would easily be Idris Elba and Jon Hamm. I hope this rumor is true so it would disqualify actors like Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

SDCC: Justice League to hit in 2017; Flash planned for 2016

WB has announced their movie plans for the DC universe after several stalls regarding Justice League and the future of all the characters. What we know as of right now is:

A Batman/Superman movie will hit in 2015 in what is described as the sequel to Man of Steel. It is expected that Henry Cavill, Zack Snyder, and Christopher Nolan will all return and I'm sure we will see more information on who will be the new Batman before too long.
In addition to the Man of Steel continuation, we will have a Flash movie in 2016 that will lead into the Justice League movie in 2017.

Now... This is all still just planning. It was pretty much announced at Comic-Con that this will happen but I am still not holding my breath. As of right now this is all we have and for the few DC fans out there that actually give a crap about this, you're welcome.

[UPDATE] Zack Snyder officially announced the Batman/Superman World's Finest storyline at Comic-Con on Saturday, July 20th. Fans are basically peeing themselves all over the internet because this is finally happening.

Legendary Pictures moves to Universal

As I previously posted, Legendary Pictures was shopping around to find a new partner after choosing not to renew with Warner Bros. This meant a pretty great deal, especially for the DC Comics movies.
It has been announced that Legendary has chosen to partner with Universal Pictures and NBC. As a result, all Legendary properties such as The Hangover trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Man of Steel will now be owned by Universal. This also means future projects such as Justice League and Man of Steel 2 will now be under Universal and not Warner Bros.

Thomas Tull, Legendary's CEO, announced the merger during a red carpet interview for Legendary's newest film, Pacific Rim. He stated that he wanted to go beyond what Warner Bros. could offer and moved to Universal for the "theme park and a television and cable network." In other words, he obviously sees the potential for profits on theme park rides based on the films (no doubt the DC Comics movies) and potential television shows that would air on NBC, USA, or SyFy. This also means Universal's projects can be co-financed by Legendary if they choose to do so.

“Comcast and NBCUniversal’s global assets in film, television and theme parks offer Legendary unmatched breadth and opportunity to grow our business.  We are delighted to be in business with this exceptional team and look forward to a successful partnership,” said Tull.

Universal and Legendary’s film partnership is a complementary arrangement for both companies.  Legendary, which is known for producing and financing successful large scale films, will continue to create and finance tent pole films based on intellectual property that is uniquely appealing to the coveted fanboy audience.  And Universal, which has a proven track record of turning films of all shapes and sizes into hits with special skills in growing and nourishing original franchises, will market, co-finance and distribute Legendary films for five years beginning in 2014.

“Legendary has demonstrated a keen ability to identify and acquire powerful fresh intellectual property based ideas, match them with strong filmmakers and turn them into blockbuster hits,” said Fogelson and Langley.  “The Universal team is thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Legendary in turning those ideas into the best and most successful versions of themselves around the world.”

Under the terms of the deal Universal and Legendary will jointly  identify opportunities to expand Legendary’s franchises and intellectual property into Universal’s theme parks, and Universal will have an opportunity to collaborate with Legendary on projects in China following Legendary’s historic deal with China Film Group.

“Legendary continues to prove that big ideas are relevant and profitable with our global movie-going audience.  We couldn’t be more thrilled to embrace the challenges and changing marketplace with Thomas and his team and we are also excited about what opportunities this will bring to our Theme Parks around the world,” said Ron Meyer, President and COO, Universal Studios.

This is a pretty big deal. Universal probably just landed one of the biggest deals possible right now. 

Man of Steel Easter Eggs have surfaced

This obviously has spoilers, so if you haven't seen Man of Steel and keep reading it's your own fault.


Easter Egg time! Here are some little eggs in Man of Steel that you may or may not have caught.

1. LexCorp and Wayne Enterprises logos were present

During the big battle in Metropolis one of the buildings blasted was a LexCorp building and an oil tanker also had the logo. As you should know, this is a nod to Superman's arch nemesis Lex Luthor.
Also, the satellite that Zod and Superman destroy while fighting in space is a Wayne Enterprises piece of equipment. Wayne Enterprises of course is owned by none other than Bruce Wayne (aka, Batman).

2. Supergirl was there... sort of.

When Clark enters the Kryptonian ship in the Arctic he encounters some cryotubes. They show us a mummy-like corpse in one of them, but there is also an empty chamber. Several of us online have speculated that the chamber was inhabited by Kara Zor-El (aka, Supergirl), Clark's Kryptonian cousin. Zack Snyder and David Goyer have declined official comments on it, but they have both said they left several loose ends open on purpose.

3. Star Sapphire

Carol Ferris (aka, the USAF Captain working with the General) is sometimes known as the semi-love interest of Hal Jordan (Green Lantern). She also doubles as the supervillain/superhero Star Sapphire. There is no word on whether the character was brought in just to think Superman is "hot" or whether she will prove to be more relevant.


This isn't all of the eggs floating around the internet, but these are the three I think are the most relevant to the potential future of Man of Steel and/or the impending Justice League movie.

Man of Steel - Review

Clark Kent is put forced to face the truth of his race and his destiny after ancient members of his race come to find and destroy him on Earth. In an attempt to save the human race from General Zod's genocide, Clark is forced to reveal who he really is to the world in Man of Steel.


I'm going to jump right into this because I don't really have much else to start with. And yes, there are spoilers so beware.

1. It was way too long. They could have cut a half hour out and no one would have known the difference.
2. The whole Lois Lane knowing exactly who Superman was the whole time bugged me.
3. The beginning dragged a lot and despite the drag they didn't really reveal a ton of information. Zack Snyder did what he does best and focused on shots that aren't really relevant just because he can make them look cool.
4. There was a lack of downtime. The amount of constant action was a bit overkill.
5. The sound effects are downright painful. I consider myself an individual with good hearing, but when your ears start hurting and ringing because of the volume and high pitch of the effects there is a problem.
6. Clark got the Superman suit way too fast. Speaking of the suit, I still hate it and the new logo.


Now with that said, I do have to say that despite all that I did like Man of Steel. I enjoyed it a lot more than I was anticipating and I was very shocked. However, I still am not a fan of Zack Snyder. I think his overuse of visual effects and the lack of time management is ridiculous and I have felt that way for years.
I also felt that this movie had the origin but it lacked. They showed Clark being sent to Earth from Krypton and then it hit fast forward 33 years where he was working odd jobs in the Arctic trying to find where he came from. They used flashbacks as the explanation and even then it was really choppy. It's like they dragged on with the part on Krypton and then all of a sudden rushed through to play catch-up and gave him the suit. It's like they just assumed that everyone knows the Superman story. I like to think people do but not everyone. That is just a given and they ignored that.

Like I said, I did like it for the most part. I thought the effects although overused were pretty well done. I also thought the acting far exceeded my expectation. Henry Cavill was awesome and I absolutely loved Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, and Michael Shannon. All of them were great. The only disappointment I really had was with Amy Adams. She was a terrible Lois Lane and I don't understand why she was cast.
I loved the parts where Clark was in Kansas and where he was searching for the right times to use his powers. I thought that was extremely well done. The only parts that really lacked, for me, was on Krypton and the battle in Metropolis. That just took too damn long.

David Goyer explains Justice League aspirations

Man of Steel doesn't officially come out until midnight tonight, but Warner Bros. has already tapped director Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer to write and direct a fast-track sequel for Man of Steel. They are also hoping it will kickstart other DC movies leading into the Justice League movie.

David Goyer has already revealed that Warner Bros. is starting to move on Wonder Woman and Aquaman to create a shared universe for Justice League to expand on. He also says that with Superman revealing himself to the world in Man of Steel opens up a whole can of worms when it comes to the superheroes being known. It also could lead to Batman putting back on his cowl after the events of The Dark Knight Rises. Another bit of info that is important to remember is he mentioned that they want the fast-track Man of Steel sequel to be before Justice League and that kind of pushes the desired 2015 release out of possibility.


Now... to me this sounds like they are trying to mimic what Marvel did almost exactly. Iron Man started it and the other heroes kind of followed suit ending (sort of) with The Avengers. Batman kind of played the Iron Man role with Nolan's trilogy, so if Superman is acting as DC's version of Thor in terms of letting the general public know of the "superhuman" heroes then that will open up the arena for even more Superman and for Wonder Woman and Aquaman to follow.

In other words, DC and Warner Bros. are just taking notes on what is working for Marvel.

Zack Snyder will direct Justice League

Well... not exactly.

Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, Watchmen) has apparently been given the director's chair for Justice League. That is, if Man of Steel is a complete success. We previously learned that Warner Bros. was basing Justice League's fate on Man of Steel anyway. They basically said if people hate Man of Steel there will be no Justice League.

Just saying that if this happens I might not see Justice League. I'm already wavering on Man of Steel. Snyder's overuse of CGI and lack of basic direction bugs the hell out of me.

"I don't know. If you're gonna do comic book movies [as big as Justice League], you really have to get them right. I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do.
It's just that... working on Green Lantern, I saw how difficult it is make that concept palatable, and how confused it all can be when you don't really know exactly where you're going with it or you don't really know how to access that world properly – that world comic book fans have been accessing for decades and falling in love with.
So at this point I have very little interest in joining that kind of world. But, you know, a great script and a good director can always turn that around."
