Warner Bros/DC confirm Aquaman film

A while back we received rumors that Jason Momoa was in negotiations to play Aquaman in the upcoming Warner Bros/DC Comic movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and a separate Aquaman film. There are now reports that Warner Bros. has commissioned not only one, but two Aquaman screenplays and that Momoa's casting is basically confirmed.

Last week we got a schedule of release dates from Warner Bros. through the year 2020 and speculation immediately began on exactly what all of those release dates might be. The plan is obviously to compete with Marvel's Cinematic Universe and create a similar one for the new DC Universe that was kicked off by Man of Steel last year.
So far we have Gal Gadot portraying Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman and it's being assumed that one of the many untitled projects is a solo Wonder Woman film. The focus now has shifted to Aquaman where Warner Bros. is "aggressively" developing the project as they have commissioned two screenplays in hopes that they could use one or combine the two for a quick development process. Script #1 is being written by Gangster Squad writer, Will Beall, while the second script was given to 300: Rise of an Empire writer, Kurt Johnstad.
As far as Jason Momoa goes, there hasn't been any official release by Warner Bros. regarding his casting, but it's pretty much a given that if he is playing Aquaman in Batman v Superman that he will also helm the solo movie and be part of Justice League. Recently a Detroit radio station was caught red-handed teasing the project and Momoa's involvement, but director Zack Snyder made a surprise call into the show and claimed that Aquaman could, "cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact." If that's the portrayal they're going for then I guess they picked the right actor.

There are so many untitled dates on the Warner Bros/DC schedule so it's difficult to wrap your head around it all, but realistically speaking we could see Aquaman as early as 2016. There is a spot on August 5, 2016 as well as two unfilled dates in 2017 (June 23rd and November 17th). There is no real timetable on Justice League anymore, but many expect it by 2017. Realistically at this point we could have solo films for Wonder Woman and Aquaman in 2016 and early 2017 and have Justice League on November 17th.
However, Zack Snyder is currently shooting Justice League back-to-back with Batman v Superman, so they might turn tradition upside down and release Justice League in 2016 before any other solo films. There really is no telling, but I don't know why they would let a project sit on the shelf for two years after filming wraps.

SDCC: Wonder Woman revealed during BvS panel

We received our first glimpse at Gal Gadot as the DC hero Wonder Woman today during the Warner Bros. panel today. It is a similar photo to what we saw of Superman a couple weeks ago and many are already talking about the different costume.

In addition to this peek at Wonder Woman, guests were shown a small bit of footage. Here is a description via Matt Goldberg:
"It’s pouring down rain in the night sky. Batman is an armored suit, his eyes glowing, and standing next to the Bat-Signal. He pulls down a switch and powers it up. The Bat-Signal (bearing the new Bat-Symbol) blasts into the sky. We pan to follow the light, but in the sky, floating in front of the signal, is Superman. His arms are crossed. His cape billows in the wind. Batman, with his mask’s glowing eyes, stares down the Man of Steel. And the Man of Steel stares back. His eyes begin to glow red. Cut back to the Dark Knight. He is unmoved. Cut to black."

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently scheduled for May 6, 2016.

First look at Wonder Woman's invisible jet

Fucking Zack Snyder.

Yes, this is the first visual of Wonder Woman's invisible jet in the Batman vs Superman project. I'm not even kidding when I say I gave my computer screen this look.

If we keep getting stupid stuff like this I might say something really mean.

Jason Momoa in talks for Batman vs. Superman

Jason Momoa nearly joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he was considered for the role of Drax the Destroyer. He was ultimately not cast as the role went to Dave Bautista, but now the DC Universe has its eye on Momoa for Batman vs. Superman.

Rumor has is that Zack Snyder is eyeing Momoa for the film's big villain which has yet to be announced. However, the role as of right now is considered unannounced but the internet is quick to come to the conclusion that he could be playing Doomsday. Another theory being supported by the internets is that he could be playing Martian Manhunter.
If you have never seen Momoa in anything, he is most recognized for the reboot of Conan the Barbarian. You know, the reboot that basically failed to go anywhere. I think it's a bit too soon to start speculating villains or heroes at this point. I feel like including Martian Manhunter would be a waste unless they are planning on including him in Justice League. With Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman being in Batman vs. Superman I feel like adding another hero would be a bit too much.

Gal Gadot cast as Wonder Woman

I'm a little late to the party, but it has been announced that Gal Gadot has been cast to play Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman. This confirms that Wonder Woman will be introduced in some way prior to Justice League in 2017 and somewhat backs up the theory that she will not be receiving her own movie.

Gadot is an Israeli born actress who is most recognizable from her work as Gisele in the Fast and Furious films. She also competed as Miss Israel in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant and served two years in the Israeli military. This will be her first major starring role and will no doubt be a recurring role. She beat out actresses such as Olga Kurylenko and Elodie Yung for the role of Wonder Woman.
Many are wondering the motivation behind casting Gadot as Wonder Woman and are hoping she isn't treated like Black Widow was in The Avengers. In other words, the basic consensus seems to be that people don't want her to just be a pretty face with minor support to the main heroes, Batman and Superman. She will also be sharing the screen with Amy Adams who was pretty lame in Man of Steel.

I personally think Wonder Woman is one of those comic heroes that is impossible to cast and/or portray correctly. I don't have much hope for this character at all so this doesn't bug me.

Wonder Woman rumored for Batman vs. Superman

Warner Bros. President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Greg Silverman, has touched on the rumor that Wonder Woman just might show up in Batman vs. Superman (aka, Man of Steel 2)*. Silverman stated,
"Wonder Woman is an amazing character. I think it’s a great opportunity both for box office success, but also to have an amazingly powerful female superhero."
Now, this doesn't guarantee that she will appear in the film but at the same time it isn't ruling out a solo film. To me it sounds like they don't know what they want out of Wonder Woman before or after Justice League. Regarding whether Wonder Woman will have a solo film or not Silverman responded,
"We are taking it all very seriously and are trying to do a plan that’s respectful to those characters and maximizes the stories as best they can, so everything that has been speculated are things that we’ve thought about."

Silverman also tried to reassure moviegoers that Warner Bros. did make the right decision in casting Ben Affleck as Batman. The studio is sticking to their guns in stating that both Superman and Batman will be pushed to their full potentials and the characters will be done justice. He urges us to wait and see the movie because the script that Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer put together is what is important, not the casting.

Would I like to see Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman? No.
Why not? It seems like Warner Bros. is trying to pull a Marvel, once again, and include the scattered heroes in major movies to round out Justice League without having to do solo films for each hero. Think of how Black Widow showed up in Iron Man 2 and how Hawkeye showed up in Thor. Those minor inclusions gave Marvel what they needed to round out The Avengers. It's the same concept. Instead of having a solo Wonder Woman film, she could just show up in Batman vs. Superman. They could in theory do the same with Green Lantern. If the solo Flash movie actually does happen we could potentially see Green Lantern pop up so we don't have yet another solo movie about him.

Oh Warner Bros. and DC... you just can't catch a break.

The CW developing The Flash; puts Wonder Woman on hold

The CW seems to be enjoying their recent hit Arrow as they have announced they are developing a new series, The Flash, from the creators of Arrow. Barry Allen (aka, The Flash) will be introduced in Arrow and will then spin-off with his own series.
With this it does appear that The CW is looking to bank on their own mini-DC universe, but it still won't include Wonder Woman. At least not yet. With the announcement of The Flash, The CW has put Wonder Woman on hold. The network previously tried to lift the character from the ashes but the potential series never made it to a pilot episode. We also can't remember The CW (previously the WB Network) had a smashing success with Smallville which was based on Superman.

What is curious about this is how or if The Flash series will play into the planned movie set for 2016. At Comic-Con the studios had announced their plans to have Batman vs. Superman out by 2016 and Justice League by 2017 with The Flash squished in between the two in 2016. WB produces and oversees The CW so it's not like this television series is happening without their knowledge. They will either find a way to tie the show into the movie or will have two completely different interpretations and stories going at the same time.

Justice League depending on Man of Steel's success?

Apparently so.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. President Jeff Robinov basically said the greenlight on the 2015 Justice League release depends on the success Zack Snyder's new Superman film, Man of Steel. If the movie does well they will move forward. If not then I guess they will scrap Justice League until they can do a better lead into it and plan a little more. I personally think they should do the latter regardless, but you can't tell Hollywood anything. They just want money. It isn't about releasing quality films anymore.

This statement most likely happened mainly due to how lackluster WB's DC adaptations have been apart from the Batman trilogy Christopher Nolan gave us. Green Lantern was a huge disappointment in 2011, Superman Returns basically bombed in 2006, they haven't been able to get anything off the ground regarding Wonder Woman, we can't possibly forget how awful Catwoman was in 2004, etc.. Even Snyder's other DC film Watchmen got some pretty harsh criticism in 2009. I'm not surprised they are putting the fate of Justice League on Man of Steel, but I feel like they might be deceived. People are going to see Man of Steel regardless just because it's Superman. There are a lot of people excited for it. Even if the movie sucks it will still rake in a decent amount at the box office. That is my prediction.

Man of Steel opens in theaters on June 14, 2013.

Warner Bros. plans to have the Justice League by 2015

Add yet another Justice League related bit of potential truth to the pile. A very large pile.

According to the LA Times, Warner Bros. is hoping to complete a Justice League film no later than next year so it can be released in the summer of 2015, a little bit after The Avengers 2 which is set for May 2015.

Will Beall is already working on a script but so far the only DC film we have on the way is Man of Steel which comes out on June 14, 2013. If they want to try and fully mock what Marvel has done with Phase 1, and now Phase 2, they will have to rush at least one more character film in for 2014 before Justice League in 2015. Whether that is another Batman flick already or one centered around Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, etc.. We had a Green Lantern film with Ryan Reynolds last year but it was a complete flop and many who saw it, including myself, hated the shit out of it. Absolute trash.

In order to make this work and have it be decent Warner Bros. has their work cut out for them. They have to begin casting for at least 5-6 main characters and also toss around the idea of introducing another independent superhero film after Man of Steel. My bet is they will try to make a movie for Wonder Woman so we'll see if I'm right. It's a bit too soon to try and reboot Batman already, imo.

The CW picks up Wonder Woman

After failed attempts, including one last year, to bring Wonder Woman to television it appears that The CW has picked up the character and is developing a show called Amazon. There is no timetable on when a pilot episode will be filmed or anything like that, but I guess Wonder Woman will be added to the superhero friendly network. The CW has already had the long lasting Superman origins show Smallville and have a new show centered around Green Arrow called Arrow which is set to premiere this fall.

Personally, I think the Wonder Woman thing is overhyped. She's a female superhero so people automatically think she's badass. I personally never got into Wonder Woman that much so this is whatever to me. I don't watch The CW and I won't start now. Not unless I hear the show is phenomenal.

Rumored: Ben Affleck to direct The Justice League?

It is rumored that Ben Affleck might be in the director's chair for the much anticipated DC Comics movie, The Justice League (aka, the movie that has never happened).Yes you read correctly... Ben Affleck.

This is extremely premature and I remind you it is only a rumor but I wouldn't get too excited or angry about this just yet. They have been talking about a Justice League movie for years and it was recently revisited a couple months ago by Warner Bros saying they might try and do what Marvel did with The Avengers and do individual character movies prior to The Justice League; a movie for The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman (aka, Man of Steel), Green Lantern (remember Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan?) Aquaman, and yet another reboot of Batman. So far every recent attempt at Wonder Woman has failed with both TV and film, it's going to be damn hard to live up to the trilogy Christopher Nolan gave us for Batman, and does anyone really give a shit about seeing a Flash movie? The only one we really have coming up that could serve as a Justice League precursor is Man of Steel which will reintroduce Superman to everyone. Well, we had Green Lantern but that movie was awful. I didn't read a single good review for that movie.

Either way you look at it I don't think we'll have The Justice League for another 3-4 years if not longer. That is if it even happens.
