First look at Jason Momoa's Aquaman

And he looks pretty badass.

Director Zack Snyder leaked the image via Twitter to tease what Momoa's portrayal of Aquaman will look like in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The costume is colorless (no surprise) and still displays the character's insignia on the belt. The trident is also pretty cool looking.
It is worth mentioning that although Aquaman is set to appear in the Justice League films, he will most likely only get a cameo in Dawn of Justice. There is no telling whether we will get any other teasers for other characters that have been cast already. Ezra Miller has been cast as The Flash while Ray Fisher has been selected for Cyborg. The "Unite the Seven" tagline could mean a couple different things; the seven seas since it is Aquaman or it could be the seven members of the Justice League.

We will see before too long. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to open March 26, 2016.

Warner Bros. announces DC release dates

Warner Bros. made some very big announcements today regarding the new DC Universe. Within the announcement includes release dates and exactly which characters are getting solo films.

After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits in 2016, the next DC film will be Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad is set to be directed by Fury director, David Ayer, and it also received a 2016 release date.
Next up on the schedule for 2017 is Wonder Woman and Justice League - Part One while The Flash and Aquaman received 2018 releases. Jason Momoa was confirmed to be starring as Aquaman and the studio confirmed Ezra Miller will star in The Flash.
2019 will bring us Justice League - Part Two and Shazam, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
2020 has a Cyborg movie scheduled along with a reboot of Green Lantern.

In addition to all of this, Warner Bros. did also announce there will be at lease one more solo Superman movie along with a solo Batman movie. With Green Lantern not coming until 2020 I think it's safe to say that if the character has any involvement in the Justice League movies it will be very minimal. I also think it's a bit interesting that Aquaman isn't coming until 2018 seeing that Jason Momoa is already confirmed to be part of Batman v Superman and Justice League - Part One.

Ezra Miller to lead The Flash in 2018

In a large amount of announcements by Warner Bros. and DC Comics we received more information about a new solo movie centered around The Flash. In the announcement the studios highlighted that the solo film will be released after Justice League - Part One in 2018 and that the actor portraying the hero is 22-year old Ezra Miller.

You might recognize Miller from the film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the television series, Royal Pains. He also gave an extremely unnerving and chilling performance alongside Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin back in 2011. He was praised for his performances thus far and has proven to give believable performances that cross drama and comedy. He is also extremely charismatic on screen. As a 22-year old he is a lot younger than any other actor in the current DC Universe, so that will prove to either be a good or a bad thing.
There is no real confirmation on whether Miller will be appearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or the first Justice League movie, but it is pretty much guaranteed that he will at least appear in Justice League - Part Two which will be released after The Flash. If he is going to have an appearance in BvS they have done a fantastic job keeping his involvement a secret. I don't think he's even been spotted on set.

I think he is a good casting choice for a comic universe, but I don't know if I would have chosen him for The Flash. If at some point they revisit The Joker, honestly my first choice was Ezra Miller. I'm a bit bummed about this. I won't lie about that. 

Warner Bros/DC confirm Aquaman film

A while back we received rumors that Jason Momoa was in negotiations to play Aquaman in the upcoming Warner Bros/DC Comic movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and a separate Aquaman film. There are now reports that Warner Bros. has commissioned not only one, but two Aquaman screenplays and that Momoa's casting is basically confirmed.

Last week we got a schedule of release dates from Warner Bros. through the year 2020 and speculation immediately began on exactly what all of those release dates might be. The plan is obviously to compete with Marvel's Cinematic Universe and create a similar one for the new DC Universe that was kicked off by Man of Steel last year.
So far we have Gal Gadot portraying Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman and it's being assumed that one of the many untitled projects is a solo Wonder Woman film. The focus now has shifted to Aquaman where Warner Bros. is "aggressively" developing the project as they have commissioned two screenplays in hopes that they could use one or combine the two for a quick development process. Script #1 is being written by Gangster Squad writer, Will Beall, while the second script was given to 300: Rise of an Empire writer, Kurt Johnstad.
As far as Jason Momoa goes, there hasn't been any official release by Warner Bros. regarding his casting, but it's pretty much a given that if he is playing Aquaman in Batman v Superman that he will also helm the solo movie and be part of Justice League. Recently a Detroit radio station was caught red-handed teasing the project and Momoa's involvement, but director Zack Snyder made a surprise call into the show and claimed that Aquaman could, "cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact." If that's the portrayal they're going for then I guess they picked the right actor.

There are so many untitled dates on the Warner Bros/DC schedule so it's difficult to wrap your head around it all, but realistically speaking we could see Aquaman as early as 2016. There is a spot on August 5, 2016 as well as two unfilled dates in 2017 (June 23rd and November 17th). There is no real timetable on Justice League anymore, but many expect it by 2017. Realistically at this point we could have solo films for Wonder Woman and Aquaman in 2016 and early 2017 and have Justice League on November 17th.
However, Zack Snyder is currently shooting Justice League back-to-back with Batman v Superman, so they might turn tradition upside down and release Justice League in 2016 before any other solo films. There really is no telling, but I don't know why they would let a project sit on the shelf for two years after filming wraps.

What we didn't get at SDCC this year

San Diego Comic-Con was full of surprises and footage, as always, but there is still a decent amount of things that fans expected to happen that simply didn't. Here are some of the things I can think of that were absent from SDCC that either should have been there or I assumed would be there and just weren't.

1. We got nothing for Justice League

I understand Justice League is still a few years away, but I honestly expected some kind of teaser for it. A photo, a logo... something. Don't get me wrong, I managed to see a leak of the BvS footage and it looked great but I expected something for Justice League.

2. No information on future DC films

We all saw that "leak" of Warner Bros' schedule for DC films that was leaked as a Comic-Con reveal. The basic fact of it is that it didn't happen. We didn't get any confirmation of release dates, future character movies, or crossovers. It was another thing that was expected but we didn't get it.

3. No footage for Jurassic World

Most of us expected at least a teaser for Jurassic World and it did not happen. The most we got for the fourth installment was the vehicle and the posters. Universal chose to tease test footage for Skull Island and announce Godzilla 2 instead.

4. No information on Marvel's massive schedule

Sure, we got a release date for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but we didn't get anything else. I was expecting Marvel to reveal some more release dates and do something similar to what we got last year. Marvel didn't close out Hall H with the big bang they usually do.

5. Nothing on Doctor Strange

Along with Marvel's kind of disappointing weekend, we didn't get anything regarding Doctor Strange. The role hasn't been cast yet but we have a release date and a director. I assumed we would at least get a logo.

6. Nothing for Fantastic Four

Yet another thing most people expected to be present at SDCC was completely missing. We got nothing for the reboot of Fantastic Four. I don't see any reasoning seeing that they already have a cast and everything.



Aside from not having panels for things like Mockingjay - Part 1 there were a lot of surprises this year and not all of them were good. I'm a bit disappointed with SDCC this year because it doesn't feel like we got a lot of major announcements. It was mostly panels for stuff we already knew about. There was a serious lack of excitement for the future of franchises.

Jason Momoa to play Aquaman in Batman v Superman

Game of Thrones veteran Jason Momoa is rumored to have been cast to play Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The role will apparently expand into Justice League and maybe more.

Momoa was previously rumored for the role of Doomsday in the DC Universe, so I don't know if I would take this too seriously just yet. The plot that is circling around states that Lex Luthor (to be played by Jesse Eisenberg) will attempt to turn Metropolis against Superman after the destructive events in Man of Steel. Aquaman (aka, Arthur Curry) comes in after his irritation about General Zod's destruction in the Indian Ocean with the World Engine

I personally think Momoa is an interesting choice for Aquaman. By interesting I mean weird. He doesn't resemble the comic character one bit and I just don't think he's the right fit for this specific character. This is how we are used to seeing Aquaman:

 

Now, take a look at Jason Momoa:

The guy was previously rumored for the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, but that role went to Dave Bautista. He has also starred in the rather terrible reboot of Conan the Barbarian along with shows like Game of Thrones, Stargate: Atlantis, and Baywatch.
I think he would probably suit Green Lantern a bit better than Aquaman.

Did Warner Bros' Comic-Con plans just leak?

According to a source, Warner Bros. plans for Comic-Con have leaked a bit early. All I have to say is if this is true they are showing their desperation and showing it hard.

Apparently, the plan was to announce the release dates for upcoming DC Comics films at SDCC and to announce certain team-ups and pretty much confirm that Justice League is filming back to back with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Also, a hint that BvS might not be a Man of Steel sequel after all. Here is the "leaked" schedule:

• Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will kick things off in May 2016
• Shazam will be released in July 2016
• Sandman will round out 2016 with a Christmas release
• Justice League kicks off 2017 in May
• Wonder Woman gets her own film in July 2017
• Green Lantern and The Flash team up for a film at Christmas 2017
• Man of Steel 2 hits theaters in May 2018

Along with this, the leak includes that  the reason BvS was delayed was so Warner Bros. could finalize contracts with actors so there can be numerous Justice League cameos in the film as a lead into the remaining 2017 films.
This all is very crammed and close together, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is already attached to star in a Neil Gaiman adaptation of Sandman, so seeing a 2016 release date for that isn't too surprising. However, we have heard absolutely nothing about Shazam so that very well could be WB's big announcement at SDCC. In order for all of this to be announced with any substance, WB is no doubt rushing to finalize even more contracts to go with the announcement.
Previous rumors included a 2016 release for a Suicide Squad film, but that was apparently scrapped by the studio.

One major thing missing from this list, if it is indeed real, is a standalone Batman film. Ben Affleck has signed a multi-film contract, but there was no info on whether it was mainly as a supporting role or if he would star in a separate Batman film.
It was also included that Ryan Reynolds will not be reprising his role as Green Lantern, so they will be starting from scratch there. We already have Wonder Woman cast, so I guess we can expect to see what Gal Gadot can do on her own. We don't have any further casting regarding the Justice League or The Flash so that should be coming soon even if the solo movies are bullshit.

This is one hell of a schedule. We will see if there is any substance to all this in about a month.

[Updated] Zack Snyder to direct Justice League

We still won't see the Batman vs. Superman project until 2016, but Warner Bros. is moving quickly to lock down director Zack Snyder for their DC universe. It was announced that not only is Zack Snyder locked to direct Justice League, but that Batman vs. Superman will be a direct lead into the film.

In addition to this, there is also word that Justice League won't see the big screen until 2018 which is a year after the tentative 2017 date already announced. There is no confirmation if the superhero team will include the original group of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter.

Not like we didn't see this coming.


[Update] Some people are spreading around, specifically @Borys_kit, that Batman vs. Superman and Justice League will film back to back. If that is true then it would explain the high level of superhero presence in BvS and would also put Justice League back on track for 2017. That ups a possibility of Justice League opening opposite a third Avengers movie, unless The Avengers 3 is set for 2018. Either way, a likely announcement for anything regarding this entire situation is SDCC this summer.

Batman vs. Superman budget set; more details revealed

Production is moving smoothly for Zack Snyder's sequel to Man of Steel. We have new behind the scenes details on the film including budget, filming location, and when filming is set to wrap up.

Michelle Grinnell, public relations for the Michigan Film Office, has stated that this film with have the state's biggest production since Oz The Great and Powerful. The budget has been set at $131 million and that's only for the Michigan location. That doesn't include other locations or post-production, so I am betting in the end the budget will surpass $131 million.
In addition to the budget, we learned that filming will take all seven sound studios at Michigan Motion Picture Studios and will utilize other locations in the state. The other location we know of right now is Yorkville, IL where production is building the Kent Farm. Filming is set to wrap in August.

Gal Gadot cast as Wonder Woman

I'm a little late to the party, but it has been announced that Gal Gadot has been cast to play Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman. This confirms that Wonder Woman will be introduced in some way prior to Justice League in 2017 and somewhat backs up the theory that she will not be receiving her own movie.

Gadot is an Israeli born actress who is most recognizable from her work as Gisele in the Fast and Furious films. She also competed as Miss Israel in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant and served two years in the Israeli military. This will be her first major starring role and will no doubt be a recurring role. She beat out actresses such as Olga Kurylenko and Elodie Yung for the role of Wonder Woman.
Many are wondering the motivation behind casting Gadot as Wonder Woman and are hoping she isn't treated like Black Widow was in The Avengers. In other words, the basic consensus seems to be that people don't want her to just be a pretty face with minor support to the main heroes, Batman and Superman. She will also be sharing the screen with Amy Adams who was pretty lame in Man of Steel.

I personally think Wonder Woman is one of those comic heroes that is impossible to cast and/or portray correctly. I don't have much hope for this character at all so this doesn't bug me.

Wonder Woman rumored for Batman vs. Superman

Warner Bros. President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Greg Silverman, has touched on the rumor that Wonder Woman just might show up in Batman vs. Superman (aka, Man of Steel 2)*. Silverman stated,

"Wonder Woman is an amazing character. I think it’s a great opportunity both for box office success, but also to have an amazingly powerful female superhero." 

Now, this doesn't guarantee that she will appear in the film but at the same time it isn't ruling out a solo film. To me it sounds like they don't know what they want out of Wonder Woman before or after Justice League. Regarding whether Wonder Woman will have a solo film or not Silverman responded,

"We are taking it all very seriously and are trying to do a plan that’s respectful to those characters and maximizes the stories as best they can, so everything that has been speculated are things that we’ve thought about."

Silverman also tried to reassure moviegoers that Warner Bros. did make the right decision in casting Ben Affleck as Batman. The studio is sticking to their guns in stating that both Superman and Batman will be pushed to their full potentials and the characters will be done justice. He urges us to wait and see the movie because the script that Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer put together is what is important, not the casting.


Would I like to see Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman? No.
Why not? It seems like Warner Bros. is trying to pull a Marvel, once again, and include the scattered heroes in major movies to round out Justice League without having to do solo films for each hero. Think of how Black Widow showed up in Iron Man 2 and how Hawkeye showed up in Thor. Those minor inclusions gave Marvel what they needed to round out The Avengers. It's the same concept. Instead of having a solo Wonder Woman film, she could just show up in Batman vs. Superman. They could in theory do the same with Green Lantern. If the solo Flash movie actually does happen we could potentially see Green Lantern pop up so we don't have yet another solo movie about him.

Oh Warner Bros. and DC... you just can't catch a break.

[Rumor] Bryan Cranston cast as Lex Luthor

Rumor alert!

I saw this a while ago, but some sources are claiming that Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) has been cast as Lex Luthor for a minimum of six films including Batman vs. Superman. Apparently they are postponing the official press release to give Breaking Bad a time to wrap up and so they can ride the momentum of the finale.

If this is true, Cranston will join Henry Cavill and new cast member Ben Affleck. In addition to Cranston signing for six films with an extension to 10 possible, Affleck has reportedly signed on for 13 Batman appearances. The role of Lex Luthor was previously rumored to be leaning toward Mark Strong (Kick-Ass), but seeing that he already appeared as Sinestro in the box office disaster Green Lantern, DC and Warner Bros. wanted to take a different route.

Batman vs. Superman is the next installment to the DC Universe that will hit on July 17, 2015.

Ben Affleck signed for multiple Batman appearances

We learned the other night that Ben Affleck has signed on to play Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, Batman vs. Superman. We now have information that Affleck has signed on for multiple films.

The reception has been overwhelmingly negative in regards to Affleck's casting. There was even a petition proposed to President Obama to make it illegal for Affleck to play Batman. The saddest part is it got over 5,000 signatures in less than 24-hours. However, Warner Bros. doesn't seem phased by the reception because Affleck has signed on for multiple films. I can only assume said multiples will include Justice League and at least one standalone Batman film. Who knows, he might even appear in the proposed movie for The Flash which is set to hit in 2016. Another possibility that the multiple movie deal isn't just acting. Affleck is a very talented director and has awards to prove it. I mention this because it was previously rumored that Affleck could be directing Justice League, so anything is possible.
We also have to bear in mind that his future as Batman will most likely depend on the reception of Batman vs. Superman, so we just have to be patient. If people hate it WB might can the whole thing and we may never get Justice League or The Flash. Everyone pull their panties out of their ass. 

In addition to the multiple movie deal, we got word that Batman vs. Superman will be entering production in February 2014 and will run all the way until August. That is an extremely long shoot but I suppose they need it if they're going to make the release date on time. Batman vs. Superman is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2015.

[Rumor] An older Batman sought after by Warner Bros.

We learned at San Diego Comic-Con a couple weeks ago that there will indeed be a Batman vs. Superman movie, but ever since then the speculation has been on for exactly who will play Batman. Christian Bale is out of the picture so where do we go from here?
So far what we know for sure is Zack Snyder will be directing and is currently working on the script with David S. Goyer and this will technically be the sequel to Man of Steel. However, rumors are flying that the studio is seeking an older actor to portray Batman to give him a more experienced look.

People are taking the fact that an excerpt from The Dark Knight Returns was read prior to the Superman/Batman logo reveal at Comic-Con as a sign that this will indeed happen and that Batman will return as a beat up veteran. Some are saying this is a smart move and that this would avoid yet another Batman origins story for a new, young Batman. However, allowing us to bypass an origins would mean it would have to rely on Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy for background and he has said that he wants the trilogy to be a standalone series. But Nolan is involved with Man of Steel, so it's not like he doesn't know what is going on.

Now if this is true, this limits the casting of Batman to a man in his late-30's to mid-40's. There is a lot of that in Hollywood, but would it really yield someone good? Only time will tell. And it needs to be a short amount of time so they can make that 2015 release date.

When I think of "who should play Batman" I look at two key factors; who can handle the physical part along with playing a believable, suave billionaire. Out of the above choices I think the frontrunners would easily be Idris Elba and Jon Hamm. I hope this rumor is true so it would disqualify actors like Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

SDCC: Justice League to hit in 2017; Flash planned for 2016

WB has announced their movie plans for the DC universe after several stalls regarding Justice League and the future of all the characters. What we know as of right now is:

A Batman/Superman movie will hit in 2015 in what is described as the sequel to Man of Steel. It is expected that Henry Cavill, Zack Snyder, and Christopher Nolan will all return and I'm sure we will see more information on who will be the new Batman before too long.
In addition to the Man of Steel continuation, we will have a Flash movie in 2016 that will lead into the Justice League movie in 2017.

Now... This is all still just planning. It was pretty much announced at Comic-Con that this will happen but I am still not holding my breath. As of right now this is all we have and for the few DC fans out there that actually give a crap about this, you're welcome.

[UPDATE] Zack Snyder officially announced the Batman/Superman World's Finest storyline at Comic-Con on Saturday, July 20th. Fans are basically peeing themselves all over the internet because this is finally happening.

Legendary Pictures moves to Universal

As I previously posted, Legendary Pictures was shopping around to find a new partner after choosing not to renew with Warner Bros. This meant a pretty great deal, especially for the DC Comics movies.
It has been announced that Legendary has chosen to partner with Universal Pictures and NBC. As a result, all Legendary properties such as The Hangover trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Man of Steel will now be owned by Universal. This also means future projects such as Justice League and Man of Steel 2 will now be under Universal and not Warner Bros.

Thomas Tull, Legendary's CEO, announced the merger during a red carpet interview for Legendary's newest film, Pacific Rim. He stated that he wanted to go beyond what Warner Bros. could offer and moved to Universal for the "theme park and a television and cable network." In other words, he obviously sees the potential for profits on theme park rides based on the films (no doubt the DC Comics movies) and potential television shows that would air on NBC, USA, or SyFy. This also means Universal's projects can be co-financed by Legendary if they choose to do so.

Universal and Legendary’s film partnership is a complementary arrangement for both companies.  Legendary, which is known for producing and financing successful large scale films, will continue to create and finance tent pole films based on intellectual property that is uniquely appealing to the coveted fanboy audience.  And Universal, which has a proven track record of turning films of all shapes and sizes into hits with special skills in growing and nourishing original franchises, will market, co-finance and distribute Legendary films for five years beginning in 2014.

Under the terms of the deal Universal and Legendary will jointly  identify opportunities to expand Legendary’s franchises and intellectual property into Universal’s theme parks, and Universal will have an opportunity to collaborate with Legendary on projects in China following Legendary’s historic deal with China Film Group.

This is a pretty big deal. Universal probably just landed one of the biggest deals possible right now. 

Christian Bale not involved with Justice League

People didn't believe it when Christopher Nolan said it or when Zack Snyder said it. Hopefully they will believe it now that it's coming straight from the horse's mouth. Christian Bale has stated that not only does he have no interest in continuing to play Batman, but that he has had no conversations with anyone about returning as the Caped Crusader for Justice League.

While speaking with EW Bale had this to say:

"We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy. Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.

I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it. It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”

Personally, I am ready to take the next step with Batman.

David Goyer explains Justice League aspirations

Man of Steel doesn't officially come out until midnight tonight, but Warner Bros. has already tapped director Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer to write and direct a fast-track sequel for Man of Steel. They are also hoping it will kickstart other DC movies leading into the Justice League movie.

David Goyer has already revealed that Warner Bros. is starting to move on Wonder Woman and Aquaman to create a shared universe for Justice League to expand on. He also says that with Superman revealing himself to the world in Man of Steel opens up a whole can of worms when it comes to the superheroes being known. It also could lead to Batman putting back on his cowl after the events of The Dark Knight Rises. Another bit of info that is important to remember is he mentioned that they want the fast-track Man of Steel sequel to be before Justice League and that kind of pushes the desired 2015 release out of possibility.


Now... to me this sounds like they are trying to mimic what Marvel did almost exactly. Iron Man started it and the other heroes kind of followed suit ending (sort of) with The Avengers. Batman kind of played the Iron Man role with Nolan's trilogy, so if Superman is acting as DC's version of Thor in terms of letting the general public know of the "superhuman" heroes then that will open up the arena for even more Superman and for Wonder Woman and Aquaman to follow.

In other words, DC and Warner Bros. are just taking notes on what is working for Marvel.

Zack Snyder will direct Justice League

Well... not exactly.

Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, Watchmen) has apparently been given the director's chair for Justice League. That is, if Man of Steel is a complete success. We previously learned that Warner Bros. was basing Justice League's fate on Man of Steel anyway. They basically said if people hate Man of Steel there will be no Justice League.

Just saying that if this happens I might not see Justice League. I'm already wavering on Man of Steel. Snyder's overuse of CGI and lack of basic direction bugs the hell out of me.

Ryan Reynolds might return for Justice League

"I don't know. If you're gonna do comic book movies [as big as Justice League], you really have to get them right. I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do.
It's just that... working on Green Lantern, I saw how difficult it is make that concept palatable, and how confused it all can be when you don't really know exactly where you're going with it or you don't really know how to access that world properly – that world comic book fans have been accessing for decades and falling in love with.
So at this point I have very little interest in joining that kind of world. But, you know, a great script and a good director can always turn that around."
