SDCC: Christopher Nolan makes Comic-Con debut

Christopher Nolan crashed the party today at San Diego Comic-Con by making his first ever appearance at the event. To go along with his surprise appearance he debuted a new trailer for his upcoming sci-fi film, Interstellar.

Paramount chose not to specify what films they were going to showcase during their panel today, so it's needless to say that the room was pretty empty. Paramount presented a redband trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine 2, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and Project Almanac. They saved Nolan's appearance, as well as Matthew McConaughey's SDCC debut, until last and surprised those who did attend with the new Interstellar trailer.
We will probably have to wait a week or so to see the trailer publicly, but judging from what people who were lucky enough to see it are saying it was pretty awesome.

Interstellar hits theaters on November 7th.

Christopher Nolan might as well just take my money now. This movie looks amazing.





It sucks we have to wait until November. Interstellar is set in the near future and finds Matthew McConaughey in the role of Cooper, an engineer and a pilot, and a father of two. After climate change brings on a global food crisis, he turns his focus on farming — until an old mentor recruits him to join a mysterious space mission. Its goal: Finding another planet capable of sustaining human life.

We (finally) have the first trailer for Christopher Nolan's new film, Interstellar. Check it out!



Now, this is a true film teaser. We hardly see any footage from the movie and I quite enjoy that. It is mostly because the film is still in production, though. Interstellar has been on my radar for a while now and I am pretty excited to check it out. The film revolves around a group of explorers who use a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the current limitations of space travel.
It has a pretty impressive cast including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, Matt Damon, etc.. Interstellar hits theaters on November 7, 2014.

Legendary exits Batman vs. Superman

It has already been announced that Legendary Pictures was ending their partnership with Warner Bros. and will begin partnership with Universal, but they were going to stick with them long enough to co-finance Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel, Batman vs. Superman (or Superman vs. Batman). In a change of events... that isn't happening anymore.

Legendary has decided to exit the Superman sequel and give up all their stake in the film in exchange for a portion of Christopher Nolan's upcoming sci-fi film Interstellar. Batman vs. Superman is not scheduled until 2015 while Interstellar hits theaters next year. This is also somewhat of a given as Legendary has partnered with Christopher Nolan for all three Batman films in the Dark Knight trilogy as well as Inception. Interstellar is being co-produced by Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros., so Legendary is probably going to see a hefty payday from this one.

Batman vs. Superman has yet to enter production or announce who will be playing Batman, but the apparent top three is Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Notebook), Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex, Oldboy), and Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike). 
Interstellar has already compiled a pretty interstellar (ha ha ha) cast which includes Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Topher Grace, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Caine, Wes Bentley, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, etc.. Production officially began earlier this week and is set for a November 7, 2014 release. 

SDCC: Justice League to hit in 2017; Flash planned for 2016

WB has announced their movie plans for the DC universe after several stalls regarding Justice League and the future of all the characters. What we know as of right now is:

A Batman/Superman movie will hit in 2015 in what is described as the sequel to Man of Steel. It is expected that Henry Cavill, Zack Snyder, and Christopher Nolan will all return and I'm sure we will see more information on who will be the new Batman before too long.
In addition to the Man of Steel continuation, we will have a Flash movie in 2016 that will lead into the Justice League movie in 2017.

Now... This is all still just planning. It was pretty much announced at Comic-Con that this will happen but I am still not holding my breath. As of right now this is all we have and for the few DC fans out there that actually give a crap about this, you're welcome.

[UPDATE] Zack Snyder officially announced the Batman/Superman World's Finest storyline at Comic-Con on Saturday, July 20th. Fans are basically peeing themselves all over the internet because this is finally happening.

Legendary Pictures moves to Universal

As I previously posted, Legendary Pictures was shopping around to find a new partner after choosing not to renew with Warner Bros. This meant a pretty great deal, especially for the DC Comics movies.
It has been announced that Legendary has chosen to partner with Universal Pictures and NBC. As a result, all Legendary properties such as The Hangover trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Man of Steel will now be owned by Universal. This also means future projects such as Justice League and Man of Steel 2 will now be under Universal and not Warner Bros.

Thomas Tull, Legendary's CEO, announced the merger during a red carpet interview for Legendary's newest film, Pacific Rim. He stated that he wanted to go beyond what Warner Bros. could offer and moved to Universal for the "theme park and a television and cable network." In other words, he obviously sees the potential for profits on theme park rides based on the films (no doubt the DC Comics movies) and potential television shows that would air on NBC, USA, or SyFy. This also means Universal's projects can be co-financed by Legendary if they choose to do so.

“Comcast and NBCUniversal’s global assets in film, television and theme parks offer Legendary unmatched breadth and opportunity to grow our business.  We are delighted to be in business with this exceptional team and look forward to a successful partnership,” said Tull.

Universal and Legendary’s film partnership is a complementary arrangement for both companies.  Legendary, which is known for producing and financing successful large scale films, will continue to create and finance tent pole films based on intellectual property that is uniquely appealing to the coveted fanboy audience.  And Universal, which has a proven track record of turning films of all shapes and sizes into hits with special skills in growing and nourishing original franchises, will market, co-finance and distribute Legendary films for five years beginning in 2014.

“Legendary has demonstrated a keen ability to identify and acquire powerful fresh intellectual property based ideas, match them with strong filmmakers and turn them into blockbuster hits,” said Fogelson and Langley.  “The Universal team is thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Legendary in turning those ideas into the best and most successful versions of themselves around the world.”

Under the terms of the deal Universal and Legendary will jointly  identify opportunities to expand Legendary’s franchises and intellectual property into Universal’s theme parks, and Universal will have an opportunity to collaborate with Legendary on projects in China following Legendary’s historic deal with China Film Group.

“Legendary continues to prove that big ideas are relevant and profitable with our global movie-going audience.  We couldn’t be more thrilled to embrace the challenges and changing marketplace with Thomas and his team and we are also excited about what opportunities this will bring to our Theme Parks around the world,” said Ron Meyer, President and COO, Universal Studios.

This is a pretty big deal. Universal probably just landed one of the biggest deals possible right now. 

The Dark Knight trilogy to hit Blu-Ray this Fall

Official details regarding a trilogy box-set for Christopher Nolan's Batman movies have hit the airwaves. We will get a 6-disc set featuring the three films and their respective special features, a Hot Wheels toy for each film, art cards by Mondo which feature every villain from the trilogy, and a 48-page hardcover book. It looks like it will also include Ultraviolet digital copies for each film. The set markets for $99.97 and will be available starting September 24, 2013.

Along with the existing special features that are already on the DVD/Blu-Rays we have, there will be two new featurettes featuring Christopher Nolan, Richard Donner, Guillermo del Toro, Zack Snyder, and Damon Lindelof. One featurette will have Nolan and Donner discussing the trials about bringing both Batman and Superman to the big screen while the other features interviews by the others about the incredible impact The Dark Knight trilogy has had. I would assume, and hope, that these two features are lengthy enough and interesting to justify spending money on a set to re-purchase movies you no doubt already have. Not to mention the fact that there are already some trilogy box-sets out already.

Christian Bale not involved with Justice League

People didn't believe it when Christopher Nolan said it or when Zack Snyder said it. Hopefully they will believe it now that it's coming straight from the horse's mouth. Christian Bale has stated that not only does he have no interest in continuing to play Batman, but that he has had no conversations with anyone about returning as the Caped Crusader for Justice League.

While speaking with EW Bale had this to say:

"We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy. Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.

I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it. It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”

Personally, I am ready to take the next step with Batman.

Legendary Pictures separating from Warner Bros.

One of the best partnerships in recent history appears to be coming to a close.

Legendary Pictures is responsible for films like Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, The Hangover trilogy, Man of Steel, Inception, 300, Watchmen, etc.. It appears that the company is looking to part ways with Warner Bros. and bond to another company.
Many were hoping the recent executive reconstruction at Warner Bros. would convince Legendary to stick around but it doesn't seem to have made much of an impact. Companies in the running to partner up with Legendary are Universal, Sony, Fox, and Lionsgate.
However, there is a bit of a hiccup with all this. Legendary CEO Tomas Tull has expressed interest in keeping the company separate from any co-financers in an attempt to do what Warner Bros. did with Harry Potter only with the future DC Comics movies. By going solo on production Legendary will then gain all the benefits of the films. If this doesn't happen and Tull finds a studio he likes, the deal will most likely go through before their next big release, Pacific Rim, which comes out on July 12th.

The only issue I see with this is... are the DC Comics movies contracted through Warner Bros. or through Legendary? If they are through WB I don't see how Legendary can gain access to continue making these films without the partnership, especially if they co-finance with a company like Sony who owns quite a few Marvel franchises like Spider-Man.


[UPDATE] - Universal has won the prize. Legendary announced on July 10th that they have merged with Universal and their television partners NBC, USA, and SyFy. 

Man of Steel - Review

Clark Kent is put forced to face the truth of his race and his destiny after ancient members of his race come to find and destroy him on Earth. In an attempt to save the human race from General Zod's genocide, Clark is forced to reveal who he really is to the world in Man of Steel.


I'm going to jump right into this because I don't really have much else to start with. And yes, there are spoilers so beware.

1. It was way too long. They could have cut a half hour out and no one would have known the difference.
2. The whole Lois Lane knowing exactly who Superman was the whole time bugged me.
3. The beginning dragged a lot and despite the drag they didn't really reveal a ton of information. Zack Snyder did what he does best and focused on shots that aren't really relevant just because he can make them look cool.
4. There was a lack of downtime. The amount of constant action was a bit overkill.
5. The sound effects are downright painful. I consider myself an individual with good hearing, but when your ears start hurting and ringing because of the volume and high pitch of the effects there is a problem.
6. Clark got the Superman suit way too fast. Speaking of the suit, I still hate it and the new logo.


Now with that said, I do have to say that despite all that I did like Man of Steel. I enjoyed it a lot more than I was anticipating and I was very shocked. However, I still am not a fan of Zack Snyder. I think his overuse of visual effects and the lack of time management is ridiculous and I have felt that way for years.
I also felt that this movie had the origin but it lacked. They showed Clark being sent to Earth from Krypton and then it hit fast forward 33 years where he was working odd jobs in the Arctic trying to find where he came from. They used flashbacks as the explanation and even then it was really choppy. It's like they dragged on with the part on Krypton and then all of a sudden rushed through to play catch-up and gave him the suit. It's like they just assumed that everyone knows the Superman story. I like to think people do but not everyone. That is just a given and they ignored that.

Like I said, I did like it for the most part. I thought the effects although overused were pretty well done. I also thought the acting far exceeded my expectation. Henry Cavill was awesome and I absolutely loved Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, and Michael Shannon. All of them were great. The only disappointment I really had was with Amy Adams. She was a terrible Lois Lane and I don't understand why she was cast.
I loved the parts where Clark was in Kansas and where he was searching for the right times to use his powers. I thought that was extremely well done. The only parts that really lacked, for me, was on Krypton and the battle in Metropolis. That just took too damn long.


What did you guys think of Man of Steel? The reception has been so mixed up so far.

[RUMOR] Christopher Nolan approached for Bond 24

Daily Mail has reported that initial talks and offers have happened between Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson and Christopher Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight trilogy. The producers initially tried to bring Sam Mendes back to direct Bond 24, but he declined the project. The original plan was to have Bond 24 released within three years of Skyfall, so that will put Bond 24 by (at least) 2015. The clock is ticking so they need to at least find a director.

However, Christopher Nolan has already committed to Interstellar which is slated for release on November 7, 2014. Given that commitment it is truly unlikely Nolan will be able to direct Bond 24. At least not to make a 2015 deadline. If there are talks that are happening between Nolan and the Bond producers it is most likely not for Bond 24, but for a future Bond project.

Christopher Nolan rumored to have "taken over" the DC Universe

There are a couple highlights to this topic. First of all, this is all rumor as of right now so don't take anything seriously.

The rumor is that Christopher Nolan has pretty much taken over the DC Universe when it comes to the movies. He already has had his own Batman trilogy and is a producer for the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Steel, which is directed by Zack Snyder. With this power it has apparently been said that Nolan could and probably will be producing the Justice League movie. Also speaking of Snyder, it is also rumored that due to Nolan's involvement that Snyder is first in line to direct.
What else? To add the cherry on top of all this they are supposedly trying to get Christian Bale to return to play Batman for Justice League and join Henry Cavill who will return as Superman.


Alright... I just want to say that I do love what Nolan did with Batman, but making his style the only path for any future DC movies is foolish. The whole "dark and gritty realism" approach isn't possible for every superhero. It worked for Batman simply because despite being a comic book hero, Batman has no super powers. He is nothing but a rich guy with a bunch of cool gadgets and a taste for justice. There are genuine super powers at play with the other Justice League characters and the realism approach would not get the job done. Of course we all have to wait until Man of Steel comes out to really see for sure, but even that wouldn't really be the true test because it is still centered around one main character. 
As far as Zack Snyder goes I think Man of Steel will be the true testament to his abilities. I liked 300 for what it was worth (meaning the visuals and a couple quotable lines) and I liked Watchmen for the most part, but he fell flat on his face with Sucker Punch. Holy crap, that movie was terrible. The guy can't write for shit and he relies on CGI to get him through every single movie. I appreciate visual directors but there comes a point where it gets ridiculous. As far as I understand Man of Steel is no different in regards to the VFX as I read the other day that Superman's cape is CGI throughout most of the movie. I let out a big sigh, shook my head, and moved on with my day.
The whole bringing Bale back as Batman scenario is ridiculous, as well. Not only has Christian Bale said himself that he is done with Batman, but I think stretching him into yet another movie would be too much especially after the somewhat so-so reviews and reception of The Dark Knight Rises. Not saying it was a bad movie, but there were a lot of people out there that didn't like it as much as they were expecting or only said it was good simply because they loved The Dark Knight so much and felt like they had to say they liked Rises just as much. Not to mention the fact that if they tied Justice League into the previous Batman storyline there would be a lot of explaining to do with the way The Dark Knight Rises ended. Just saying.
Like I said, I loved Nolan's trilogy but there were things about Bale's performance that I never really liked too much. It must be said that if he does return to do Batman at least once more I don't think I can take another movie with that ridiculous batman voice. It's like listening to a heavy metal song with just vocals. I think Christian Bale wants to move on with his career and do more than just Batman movies and they should let him. Do what DC has done since Batman appeared on screen... re-cast him every couple of movies. Plus, if they bring him back it won't just be for one movie. It would probably be a multi-movie deal and I don't think Bale would be up for 2-3 more Batman jobs.

Now there is another possible way this could go and it is being predicted by some. It is possible that there could be a movie based on World's Finest (aka, a movie with just Batman and Superman) before the full Justice League movie. This is a stupid idea due to what I mentioned earlier; the way The Dark Knight Rises ended would have to either be completely flipped upside down or they would have to find a way to make Bruce have the change of heart to return. It just makes no sense. To have it happen would ruin a lot of things.



Either way this gets spun it's just more evidence that Warner Bros. sucks at this whole comic book thing. They are running around like chickens with their heads cut off. They are trying to compete with Marvel and they don't know how to mimic the success because, let's face it, DC characters and story arcs are not as good as Marvel's are. It is impossible to create the same type of thing with another catalog. As it stands Justice League is depending on the success of Man of Steel anyway, so we will have to wait and see. If Man of Steel is as good as some people are saying it is then we might actually have to witness this happen. They just need to stop while they are behind, imo.

No Director's Cut for The Dark Knight Rises

Despite previous rumors that we were going to get an extended director's cut Blu-Ray for The Dark Knight Rises, with around 30min of extra footage, it has now been confirmed that we will not. Christopher Nolan doesn't seem one for director's cut releases and I guess he isn't about to start now.

I was looking forward to seeing Bane's origin story and whatever else was within that 30 minutes, but I guess some things just aren't meant to be seen outside of the editing room.

The Dark Knight Rises - Review

Despite the tragedy here in Colorado I still went out to a different theater last night and saw the much anticipated finale to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. I have been excited for this movie for over a year, well actually since The Dark Knight in 2008, so I wasn't going to let the actions of one man stop me. However, I will admit it was eerie being in a theater auditorium that wasn't even half full on not only a Friday but on an opening weekend like this.
With that said, this movie didn't disappoint. Not really. Overall I think that it was really, really well done and I absolutely loved the ending. Were there little things that bothered me? Sure. Were they enough to ruin anything? Hell no. I will talk more about those things in the spoiler section after the jump so you are safe reading until then.
I thought the acting was very good, as always, and I think the casting for characters was fantastic. I mean no disrespect when I say this but Tom Hardy as Bane seriously is up there with Heath Ledger as The Joker. Obviously it isn't as powerful as Heath's was and I do still think his portrayal of The Joker is #1, but in terms of the various villains we have had in this trilogy, including Jonathan Crane and Harvey Dent, I think Bane was pushed above all the rest to a clear second behind The Joker. And as surprised as I am to be saying this I honestly liked Anne Hathaway as Catwoman (aka, Selina Kyle). It was more of the genuine cat burglar approach rather than the approach Tim Burton did with Batman Returns where she was out for revenge more than anything. I thought the musical score complimented the character best because whenever Catwoman was up to something there was a recognizable, sneaky-like piano tune that would play. It was really well done and I am pleased to say that I was happy with it. I was real worried about Catwoman.
The main thing that I felt was despite the movie being 2 hours and 45 minutes, it still felt very rushed to me. I felt that they tried to do a little too much at one time with too many main to semi-main characters. I also felt the return, or rise, of Batman back into Gotham was too soon. It was like one minute Bruce Wayne is a recluse and then the next minute he is back on the streets chasing after criminals. It just felt too soon.

Now I will talk about spoilers and key points in the plot so I advise you do not continue reading until you see The Dark Knight Rises.

Aftermath of the Colorado theater shooting

I wrote yesterday my direct link to the shooting at the Century 16 theater shooting during the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. I went online this morning and we are already seeing the aftermath of the shooting. Not only are 12 people still dead but the effect on Warner Bros., Christopher Nolan, and the entire country is a bit overwhelming.

1. Warner Bros. has announced it will not report the opening weekend box office numbers for The Dark Knight Rises out of respect for the victims and their families.

“Out of respect for the victims and their families, Warner Bros. Pictures will not be reporting box office numbers for The Dark Knight Rises throughout the weekend. Box office numbers will be released on Monday.”

 2. AMC Theaters has banned costumes and face covering masks for moviegoers and several TV networks, including NBC and CBS, have pulled TV spots and trailers for The Dark Knight Rises. The new trailer for Gangster Squad was also pulled from before the film due to the fact that there is a scene in the trailer of a hit squad opening fire on a movie theater. It has also been rumored than Warner Bros. is currently revising the main theatrical trailer and the current TV spots to edit out a majority of the violence and weapons.

3. In addition to the costume ban, several theaters have increased security both outside and inside the theater complexes. Both private security and city police officers have been brought into several theaters to patrol around.

4. The director of the recent Batman trilogy, Christopher Nolan, also made a statement regarding the theater shooting.

"Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of 'The Dark Knight Rises,' I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

*sigh*
This is just sad, guys. It's so close to home for me, literally. I am shaken. However, I did still go see The Dark Knight Rises at a different theater last night. My review will be up soon.

Official runtime for The Dark Knight Rises

We will be sitting in the theater watching a 164 minute and 27 second movie, otherwise known as The Dark Knight Rises. It is 12 minutes longer than The Dark Knight and 24 minutes longer than Batman Begins.

I can do that.

As a whole I thought the show sucked. I don't know why they keep inviting Russell Brand to host because he is incredibly unfunny and annoying. When the audience doesn't laugh at your jokes there is a problem. He had to tell them to applaud and laugh a couple times and his only way of getting audience feedback was to keep yelling "THE HUNGER GAMES! TWILIGHT!" I hope he never hosts again or I might cut myself with a large piece of glass and send the tape to MTV.
The guest list was fairly weak as well, I thought. Not to mention they went to commercial after every category. It was like 4-5 minutes of show time and then 5 minutes of commercial in a steady rotation. I found it ironic that they had Kristen Stewart present Best Female Performance seeing that is is like the first year in the past 4 that she hasn't been nominated for a Twilight movie. I don't know if it was rude or just an odd coincidence. I was happy Jennifer Lawrence got it, though. The archery bit with her, JJ Abrams, and Joel McHale was pretty funny as well.
I also just want to say that Johnny Depp playing with The Black Keys was epic. I didn't know what to think because I was too busy enjoying myself. That was a real treat and he definitely deserved the good time and the recognition. I love Johnny Depp.
Emma Stone winning some new award was confusing to me. I like Emma Stone a lot but what was the point of that award?
And of course... The Dark Knight Rises footage was amazing. Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Christopher Nolan all appeared to present it and I loved every second of it. 

Overall it did suck, though. I can't believe I sat through the whole thing.
