Avengers: Age of Ultron - First Teaser

This teaser was originally supposed to premiere during next week's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode on ABC, but like just about everything it leaked online. Marvel did quick damage control by blaming Hydra for the leak and then uploaded the trailer on their YouTube page. I guess it's not a leak if it's in 1080p on YouTube.

Personally, I think this trailer looks fantastic. It's menacing, conflicting, and it looks like it's definitely going to be even crazier than The Avengers was. Not to mention Ultron looks and sounds like a fucking badass. I am very excited.

Is Sony negotiating with Marvel over Spider-Man?

Last week there were rumors flying around that Marvel Studios would be splitting The Avengers 3 into two films and that the heroes involved wouldn't be our current Avengers. Now there are more rumors that Sony is currently negotiating with Marvel to include Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This is potentially all bullshit as Sony has not budged at all on Spider-Man in the past and rumors of a Spidey cameo in the first Avengers movie was quickly proven false over rights issues. Seeing that Spider-Man is now the only Marvel property that Sony owns, I don't see why they would realistically be willing to share, especially with Venom and Sinister Six coming up. If they cross The Amazing Spider-Man film arc into the MCU, that would ensure that every single movie would have to tie together. Personally, I think it's too much. That would mean backtracking and changing existing arcs, etc. It's a big fat no.

Not to mention, the biggest issue here is rights. As you may recall, there were some people calling for an Avengers and X-Men crossover due to the utilization of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Age of Ultron. The resolution of that was the studios didn't want to pay for the full crossover due to character rights. Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman has made his opinion public on the issue stating the studios need to suck it up because the universes should be together. In a perfect world, Mr. Jackman.

Marvel announces release dates through 2019

Although they are all untitled releases, Marvel has shared some added release dates for planned films through 2019.

We will have Marvel releases on:

July 28, 2017
November 3, 2017
July 6, 2018
November 2, 2018
May 3, 2019


It is assumed that some of these dates will be sequels to films set for Phase Three (aka, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange), but we could also see a solo Black Widow spin-off and a film for Black Panther. Doctor Strange is still without an official release date, but most are assuming it's going to fill one of the 2016 release dates.

Upcoming releases we currently have dates for include:

Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1st)
The Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1, 2015)
Ant-Man (July 17, 2015)
Captain America 3 (May 6, 2016)

There are also still two unfilled 2016 slots for July 8, 2016 and May 5, 2017. Many are guessing that the May 2017 date will belong to a third, and possibly final, Avengers film. I would also guess if Guardians of the Galaxy takes off that we will see a sequel to that and possibly some solo spin-offs.

First official images for The Avengers: Age of Ultron

I'm a bit surprised this is hitting now and not at Comic-Con later this month, but I'll take it.

Marvel has released, via Entertainment Weekly, the first images from The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film is the featured story in the upcoming magazine issue and includes an interview with director Joss Whedon.

With these images we get the first official look at Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch along with confirmation that Colonel James Rhodes, aka War Machine/Iron Patriot, will be in this Avengers film. We also see Banner working closely with Stark and what seems like an Avengers party in the Stark tower.
Joss Whedon also elaborated a bit on what role the villain robot, Ultron, will play in the film. There is already confirmation that Ultron is being portrayed by James Spader via motion capture, but he originates directly from Tony Stark as he creates an AI robot to replace the necessity for him to physically wear the Iron Man suit. Seeing that Ultron is AI and much smarter than the average human, he determines that Earth would be better without humans and aims to destroy them.

I am sure we will know more after Comic-Con next week and that we might even get another teaser like we did last year. However, it is possible that Marvel will do what they did with the first Avengers film and save the teaser for the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy. Either way, I'm sure we will see some footage soon. The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1, 2015.

[Confirmed] Why did Edgar Wright leave Ant-Man?

It was rumored that Edgar Wright hopped out of the director's chair for Marvel's Ant-Man over script rewrites and changes, but we now have confirmation that the rumors were true.

The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Marvel had been unhappy with Wright's interpretation of the character and with his direction for weeks prior the departure. What they have quickly discovered is by driving Wright away they have also lost quite a few key crew members who also departed after learning that filming would most likely not start on time. Marvel is currently scrambling to find another director and to fill crew positions to replace the people who left.
Filming was originally slated to begin on June 2nd and Wright had already gone through rather extensive rewrites of the script, but Marvel president Kevin Feige still wasn't happy. He had ordered even more revisions and rewrites of the script behind Wright's back. When Wright received the newly revised script last week he apparently walked on the spot. Marvel's way of cleaning it up was to say they didn't agree on the vision of the film.

This is still a bit shocking to me and to a lot of other people. Edgar Wright has been working with Marvel on this project for 7 years. Feige even credited Wright on the film even being considered saying that they believed in Wright's vision and the film was because of him.
However, this seems to be a trend with the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since The Avengers was released. More independently thinking and visionary directors have already chosen not to return for Marvel sequels due to the concept of "Marvelizing" all of the Phase Two films. Kenneth Branagh did a rather fantastic job directing Thor, but he chose not to return to direct Thor: The Dark World because of clashes with the studio. Patty Jenkins had been hired to direct Thor: The Dark World but was subsequently fired due to disagreements with the studio. Joe Johnston also chose not to return for Captain America: The Winter Soldier after clashing with the studio over his vision of Captain America. The newest casualty, aside from Wright, is Drew Goddard who left the upcoming Daredevil series over creative differences.
The issues aren't exclusive to directors, either. Edward Norton came to a standstill with Marvel over The Incredible Hulk and was later replaced by Mark Ruffalo. Terrance Howard was also replaced by Don Cheadle after just one Iron Man film due to differences with the studio. Josh Dallas also left after Thor and was replaced by Zachary Levi.

Basically, sources are claiming that when it comes to Ant-Man that Wright turned out to be a bit too quirky for the vision that Feige and the other Marvel "powers that be" have in mind. They feel that they have taken enough risk with James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy and didn't want two bombs in one year if people find Gunn's film too weird. Hell, I went to see X-Men: Days of Future Past and when I got a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy my dad looked at me with a very confused look on his face. Gunn has already expressed some sympathy for Wright but in the end stated that they, "just don't have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way."
At this point it does seem that Marvel wants to find filmmakers and actors that will just ride the gravy train that The Avengers gave the studio. Not to mention that Marvel is now owned by Disney and they are in the habit of milking things to the last penny no matter how many good people are thrown in the trash. If you express too much vision or independent thought about these characters, you can expect to lose your job. It's just the way it is now.


The question now is whether Ant-Man will be released on time. If they can't find a director soon there is word that some of the actors might have to walk due to other scheduling restrictions. Marvel is insisting that Ant-Man will be completed in time to meet the July 17, 2015 release date but at this point... don't hold your breath too tight. I still think this is one of the worst decisions Feige has made so far. It's even worse than the reveal of The Mandarin in Iron Man 3.

Hugh Jackman still wants Wolverine in The Avengers

I am pretty sure I talked about this before, but it has come up once again.

Hugh Jackman has previously expressed his interest in joining the expanded Marvel Cinematic Universe by bringing his X-Men character to The Avengers. If I recall correctly, he was bashing the studios for their rights protection and said they could easily work out a deal so the characters could cross studio lines.
Well, Jackman is at is again. In recent interviews for X-Men: Days of Future Past he expressed his interest and desire in Wolverine joining The Avengers once again. He stated:

"I would love to see him as part of The Avengers because there’s a great dysfunction among that team, and I think Wolverine would fit right into that. He’d like that.”

Another thing he hopes for? A battle between Wolverine and the Hulk.

“There’s no doubt he’d get in a fight with Hulk at some point. Those two bad, rage-filled characters are going to square off at some point. It would be quite fun. I don’t know how much fun to shoot it would be, because I’m sure I’d be on the worst end of it, but hey, he can heal.”

Last time this happened it seemed that Jackman's suggestions fell on deaf ears, but if he keeps badgering the studios you never know what will happen. Hell, he has enough money that maybe he will offer to pay some of the royalties if he wants it this bad. 
Personally, I would love to see a full Marvel crossover film that would include The Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four but I am doubting that will ever happen. They have a hard enough time agreeing on anything. We can't even get a Spider-Man cameo for The Avengers.

First look at The Avengers: Age of Ultron

We got some set photos from Italy today regarding The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Within these we got a first peek at Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and Ultron (James Spader).

I will admit I wasn't feeling the whole emo, goth thing at first for Scarlet Witch but I have warmed up to it. I still do not like the Quicksilver look, but at least it looks better than the Ramona Flowers lookalike in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Marvel unveils 2016 release to be...

Make way for the third installment of Captain America!

Marvel has had an untitled 2016 slot reserved for quite sometime now. Many speculated it to be a Doctor Strange movie or potentially another Iron Man. We now have confirmation that Captain America 3 is set for theaters in May 6, 2016. There is still an untitled Marvel project slated for May 2017, so it is very possible Doctor Strange is still coming to the big screen. There is still a summer 2016 date open as well.
This comes in the wake of overwhelming positive reviews, so far, of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Early screenings have yielded reviews saying it is captivating, thrilling, and has an incredibly strong plot. It seems that Captain America could be taking the cake away from Thor and Iron Man a little bit. Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters in less than a month on April 4th.

And just in case you didn't catch it, this release date puts it directly head to head against WB's Batman vs Superman project which shifted from 2015 to 2016 a few months back. Now the heat is on to see which date changes first because it is very unlikely these will stay in direct contention. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already said he won't budge on the release, so this is a smart move by Marvel to put some more sweat onto the brow of WB and DC Comics.


Marvel still has the jump on WB/DC seeing that the next film from WB isn't set until 2016 and we will be getting a total of four Marvel films in that time. Those films being Captain America: The Winter Solider, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man. Add the third Captain America and that is five films against one. Unless a surprise project involving other Justice League members surfaces, Marvel wins once again.

Age of Ultron schedule to fast-track Scarlett Johansson

Yesterday it was announced that Scarlett Johansson is pregnant with her fiance which is obviously happy news. However, one of my first comments was so much for Black Widow having a huge part in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Apparently Marvel thought the same as they announced their intent to fast-track all of Johansson's scenes beginning right after her press tour for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Filming is set to begin overseas on April 5th.

This is a no brainer, in my opinion. Not only is there no way of telling when she will begin to show or exactly how pregnant she currently is, but it isn't necessarily safe to have a pregnant woman tumbling around doing stunts. Unless they have a major shift in their plans for Black Widow, I wouldn't expect too much at this point. This doesn't really bother me as Black Widow isn't necessarily a favorite of mine.

Marvel considering Black Widow spin-off film

For whatever reason, Black Widow is becoming quite popular with viewers when it comes to Marvel. After Scarlett Johansson's character was introduced in Iron Man 2, she has appeared in The Avengers and has a big role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It has also been said that her role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron is a lot bigger and more relevant. With that, naturally, Marvel is apparently considering a spin-off solo Black Widow film.

Kevin Feige describes her role in Age of Ultron as "very big" and stated that filming begins in late March. We are set to learn more about who she is and what she was prior to S.H.I.E.L.D. Now with that said, it is possible that we could see a solo film. Feige states they are brainstorming ideas but nothing is set in stone. I would bet if they are to do one it will be in Phase Three prior to the third Avengers movie. That's just my prediction.
I personally have never been a big fan of Black Widow, so if this never happens I won't be upset. I think the further expansion of every single character is a mistake. Not every member of The Avengers needs their own major story arc and/or their own movie(s). I always saw Black Widow and Hawkeye as supporting characters that are just there. There are already rumors that the Hulk will get another solo treatment which leaves Hawkeye completely in the dust. I don't think this is a smart move.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron begins shooting

Production for the anticipated Avengers sequel has begun shooting in Johannesburg. In addition to this location, production will eventually move to locations in London and northern Italy.
South African mayor Parks Tau thanked Marvel due to the economic boost it is sure to produce and the creation of jobs. The shoot in Johannesburg will use over 1,000 people over the course of two weeks.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2015. It brings back Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, and Mark Ruffalo and will introduce Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and James Spader.

Thor 3 announced by Marvel; writers locked down

This hasn't been a major, formal announcement but hiring screenwriters is enough to confirm that a third Thor film is in the works by Marvel. The studio reportedly has hired Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost to pen the script. The pair previously wrote the animated X-Men: Evolution series. Yost also worked on Thor: The Dark World while Kyle moved his way up in the Marvel executive offices and is currently the senior VP of production and development. Chris Hemsworth will also be returning as the God of Thunder.

This comes soon after the Russo brothers began negotiations to return and write the third Captain America film. There are no plot details released for the third installments of either Thor or Captain America, but there is a possibility we might see either of them in 2016 or 2017. Marvel has locked up dates during both years for untitled projects. There are a number of projects that could go to these dates such as Thor 3, Captain America 3, Iron Man 4, a new movie about the Hulk, or it could go to the rumored Doctor Strange project. There are even talks of a Black Panther movie and it is also possible 2017 could be The Avengers 3. Either way, there are a lot of stories being tossed around at Marvel and they have until 2021 to get it all done. I would imagine they'll wrap up the characters we have now before fully moving onto Phase Three characters (like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange), but you never know.

[Rumor] Marvel seeking Johnny Depp for major role

Rumor alert!

This is minor but potentially big. According to the mighty internets, Marvel has someone in mind for Doctor Strange and that person might just be Johnny Depp. Previous rumors circling around this project included Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Viggo Mortensen potentially being cast in the lead role.

Sources are claiming that Depp accepted a meeting with Marvel to discuss the character and the role. Depp has been vocal in the past about his desire to jump on board with Marvel at some point if the opportunity presented itself. It is also notable to mention Depp's longstanding relationship with Disney. He is basically their poster child for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and has also starred in Disney films such as The Lone Ranger and Alice in Wonderland. He is also scheduled to reprise the role of the Mad Hatter in a second Alice in Wonderland installment as well as donning Captain Jack Sparrow at least once more.
Disney and Marvel are both probably thinking that Depp will draw viewers to a new, unknown character. It is also notable to mention the fact that he is a good 20-years older than the title character. Depp will be 51 this year and Doctor Strange is described to be about 30-years old. However, it has been said that if he signs the contract the script will be altered to fit him in pretty much any way possible.

Now... one important thing to remember is that we won't see a Doctor Strange movie until at least 2016. It is part of Phase Three which is kicking off with Ant-Man on July 31, 2015. The earliest we will see anything about Doctor Strange is probably a post-credits cameo after The Avengers: Age of Ultron or after Ant-Man. I wouldn't think they would hint at him earlier than that.

Age of Ultron receives another villain

In addition to a main villain battling against The Avengers in the upcoming sequel, we will have another villain to test the team. This villain is rumored to be more relevant to recent additions of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

HitFix is reporting that Baron Von Strucker is the second villain in addition to Ultron that will be battling The Avengers, Von Strucker is another H.Y.D.R.A. leader (along with Red Skull whom we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger) and former Nazi soldier who has been altered to practically no physical vulnerability. He also possesses a super healing power which allows him to cheat death.As far as casting this character goes, apparently Marvel is seeking a physically imposing man aged 40-50. Rumors are already swirling around Dougray Scott and Marton Csokas.
Now, how does this come into play? Well, it is being said that Von Strucker is the one who brings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into the mix because they are both on his side. If this is true it will be an interesting storyline to see exactly how the twins join The Avengers. Unless they are altering the characters to be more of a "frenemy" situation than an ally.The other question is how this villain will tie into Ultron or to the other Avengers. I also want to bring up that most people are forgetting that we still might have Thanos in some capacity, so if that is the case this makes three villains total.

I am not putting too much stock in this just yet, but I am not counting it out. Until we get more info on the plot of The Avengers: Age of Ultron I imagine we will be getting a lot of rumors and word on the street situations.

[Updated] Paul Rudd in talks for Ant-Man

So it appears the rumors were true. Paul Rudd is apparently in very early talks to play Ant-Man in the upcoming Marvel film. Hank Pym (aka, Ant-Man) is being brought to us by Edgar Wright on July 31, 2015.

It was originally rumored that Simon Pegg was being considered for the role, but those were shot down after word got out that Wright was leaning towards Rudd for the lead role. Rudd's direct competition was Joseph Gordon-Levitt who just signed on to direct and star in an adaptation of Sandman. It is assumed that Hank Pym will be dealing with the backlash of The Avengers: Age of Ultron seeing that the sequel opens just three months prior to Ant-Man. There are no plot details as of now and no villain set, but it has been said that the main villain from Age of Ultron will not play a part in Ant-Man.
In the comic world, Pym was a founder of The Avengers along with his girlfriend, Janet Van Dyne (aka, Wasp). In the cinematic universe it appears he will be joining the party a little late as we already have Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America, and Hulk in the group. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they add in a Pym cameo seeing that Ultron is his own creation. Either that or Ultron will ultimately be saved until The Avengers 3.

[UPDATE] Marvel has confirmed that Paul Rudd will play Ant-Man. The studio says this deal has been finalized for quite sometime, it just hadn't been officially released. They also cited that Rudd has been their frontrunner since Wright's film was approved.
After letting this sink in a bit, I don't think Paul Rudd will do a bad job. Similar to the other heroes they have a decent mixture of comedy and seriousness and Paul Rudd is great at balancing both. Welcome aboard, Paul.

Thor: The Dark World - Review

Thor struggles to defeat an enemy neither Asgard nor Odin can overcome while attempting to balance his reunion with Jane Foster and impending rise to the throne in Thor: The Dark World.


To go more in depth to the synopsis:
A long-standing war is brought to Asgard as Malekith, the leader of the "extinct" dark elves, seeks to try and reclaim the Aether, a powerful weapon kept in Asgard's weapons vault. Malekith attacks Asgard as Jane Foster wanders into an alternate dimension in the UK and obtains an unknown source of Aether. During this event, Heimdall notifies Thor that Jane has disappeared from his watch, so Thor returns to Earth and swoops her to Asgard with him. They soon learn that Malekith is after the Aether and will follow no matter where they attempt to keep or hide Jane. Thor winds up turning to his warrior friends and his untrustworthy brother, Loki, to defeat Malekith and the dark elves once and for all.


Now... I want to start by saying this movie was very, very well done. It has a very different theme than Thor did and was a lot more eventful. Thor fully embraces his birthright and is much more aware of his responsibilities as the future King of Asgard as well as the downsides to the throne. I also thought despite the darkness to the overall plot, it balanced humor very well. It was serious, it was funny, and it was very well balanced. And yes, there was a Stan Lee cameo.

As far as acting goes, I think a lot of the roles were switched in comparison to the first movie. Thor was far less arrogant and seemed to embrace his responsibilities more. Chris Hemsworth handled that very well and it shows how in control of the character he is. Tom Hiddleston was great, as always, and Natalie Portman also showed her control of Jane Foster as she had a bit of a different tone in this one as well. Instead of being awestruck over Thor she was a bit defensive but still longing. Her character was definitely left open for at least one more movie. I do have to say that I think the one who dominated this movie was Christopher Eccleston as Malekith. He was just fantastic to watch and very menacing. Definitely a great villain actor.
The shift in directors probably was for the better now that I have seen both movies. Initially when it was announced that Kenneth Branagh wasn't going to return for The Dark World a lot of people had mixed reactions. Some loved that and some hated it. I think Alan Taylor did a fantastic job and brought a new evolution to the characters that was very necessary. It is important to establish these characters outside of The Avengers, and Taylor was very successful.
One more thing to mention here before I get into spoilers is the visual effects. I think this one had some of the best visual effects in a Marvel movie thus far, obviously excluding The Avengers. Asgard is beautifully rendered and the attack for the Aether was handled well, too. I also didn't think the Aether was too cartoonish either. It maintained fantasy but was a pretty good reality borderline.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson confirmed for The Avengers 2

It has been rumored for quite sometime, but we now have confirmation that Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) has officially joined the cast of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. He will be playing Quicksilver, aka. Pietro Maximoff. Quicksilver is the son of Magneto and brother of Scarlet Witch (aka, Wanda Maximoff). Scarlet Witch will be played by Elizabeth Olsen. The third new cast member to join Taylor-Johnson and Olsen, so far, is James Spader who will be playing Ultron. 

Taylor-Johnson will be the Marvel version of Quicksilver as Evan Peters is tackling the same character for Sony in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.

First trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier

In the sequel to 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, we follow the Captain as he struggles to adapt to the current world and fights his moral center in regards to the moral "grey area" S.H.I.E.L.D. operates in. It also serves as a re-introduction to his wartime friend Bucky Barnes, aka. The Winter Soldier. Bucky has been engineered into a super assassin.

I think this is a great first trailer and it seems to promise a decent amount of action and conflict. It doesn't give any background to The Winter Soldier, but I'm sure this isn't going to be the only trailer we will have. I also like the new Captain America suit.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens up on April 4, 2014. It stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford, Sebastian Stan, and Anthony Mackie.

We have a fairly plain but new teaser poster for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

To me the poster resembles the Star Trek Into Darkness poster, but what can you do. They all kind of look the same these days.

In addition to the poster we will also be getting the first official teaser trailer on Thursday.

Frontrunners for Ant-Man revealed

Everyone who was hoping for Simon Pegg needs to sit down to prepare for some pretty unsurprising news.

The frontrunners to lead Edgar Wright's Ant-Man are apparently Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Surprise? No. It seems that these two are in just about everything these days.
It is being reported that both Gordon-Levitt and Rudd are going to meet with Edgar Wright and Marvel executives once more before a decision is made. The role of Ant-Man (aka, Hank Pym) is that of a brilliant scientist who invented a substance giving him the ability to shrink in size as his own will.
