Best David Fincher films?

Everyone is going on about David Fincher lately because of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I would say most people know him specifically for Fight Club, Se7en, and The Social Network. It got me thinking... what are my favorite Fincher films?

Panic Room (2002)
I remember not liking it much when it first came out. I was only like 12 or 13 when Panic Room came out so I didn't really know anything. I re-watched it a couple times since then and I really like it. The story itself is quite interesting and Fincher brought it to life in a way that is even more interesting. The way it was filmed, the way the characters molded together, etc.. It isn't the best but it isn't one to completely pass over.

Se7en (1995)
I love this movie. I own it and have seen it I don't know how many times. There really isn't anything to say about Se7en other than it was fantastic. The cinematography, the music, the acting, the editing, etc.. Love it. Love it, love it, love it.

Zodiac (2007)
This one was underrated, imo. Similar to Panic Room it wasn't the best but it didn't deserve to be as glossed over as it was. It gave another example of what Jake Gyllenhaal can do when he is in front of a camera (the other example being Donnie Darko). It also put an interesting insight on the subject of the Zodiac killer.

Best movie of 2011. Fincher captured every important aspect of the book with precision and the way he brought it to the screen was incredible. I was blown away. By far the best film he has ever done.

The Game deserves an honorable mention as well.


As for his most hyped...
I have seen The Social Network and I hated it. The editing was weird, the coloring was awkward, and the story itself was too soon. Making a movie about a social networking site that is not only constantly changing but that isn't even that old was a bold movie. A very bold move. I didn't like it but I know others did, obviously, so I take that one with a grain of salt.

I have never seen Fight Club, nor have I seen all of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Don't hurt me. I will see them eventually. I just have never had much motivation. I got annoyed with the hype of both films and it made me not want to watch them.

A couple issues with this list... Where the hell are the trailers for Thor, Chronicle, Insidious, and Paranormal Activity 3 (shitty movie but good trailer)? Thor in particular. All of the trailers and teasers for Thor were fantastic. I also thought the teaser for Chronicle was very well done.

Trailers I would have taken off the list for sure are 24, 20, 19, and 15. Seeing that they put those in the list I'm surprised Twilight Breaking Dawn - Part 1 wasn't on there with them. *shudder*


But I agree 100% with #1. The teaser and the full trailer for that film are like short films. Excellent short films.

As far as the high points go those listed are 100% correct, especially the cast of Thor. Thor was by far the best comic book movie of 2011. Hell, it was the best released thus far, imo.

The low points are also spot on, especially Green Lantern. If I would have been by myself I would have left the theater. That movie was completely horrible and I never want to see it again. As far as not being able to understand Bane... I can understand him just fine? I don't know what everyone has their panties in a bunch over. It's muffled but that's kind of the point. You can't expect a man in a mask to have a perfectly clear voice. I was more confused at what it actually sounds like rather than not being able to understand it. We'll have to wait and see on that one. Only like 7 more months to go!

Curse my laziness

I rented Melancholia on iTunes like a month ago and when I opened the player last night I got a notice that it had expired. I went back into the store to rent it again and it's no longer available. That rental was like $6.99.

The Tree of Life

OMG... this movie sucked. I do not in any way, shape, or form understand why people loved this one so much. For the first 45 minutes I felt like I was watching a show on space on The Discovery Channel with random dialogue. It made absolutely no sense. They hardly let you know who Sean Penn's character is, they don't let you know the time frame, you never really find out exactly who died and why everyone is so sad, and then you're thrown into an hour of random footage of young boys glaring at their father and/or crying. There is hardly any dialogue throughout the entire movie other than voice over, I don't remember ever hearing any of the character's names... it is so random!

Then the oldest boy, who turns out to be Sean Penn, becomes crazy and apparently loses his innocence after breaking into a neighbor's house and stealing a nightgown? Give me a break. Everything was so overhyped and overplayed.
The ending is what was the biggest mindfuck. All of a sudden Sean Penn is on the beach with his younger self and basically every other character from the movie, including the no-name brother who apparently died. Then there is more space and nature footage and then it's over.


What the fuck. The saddest part about all of this is this film is probably going to take home a lot of awards and it doesn't deserve them at all. People are praising a movie that sucks. Seriously sucks.

Makes sense, tbh. Seeing that I know the trilogy (books and movies) I think a lot of marketing in terms of actual merchandise is pretty dumb. Given what happened to Lisbeth I don't see why anyone would necessarily want to become her.
I think the buzz of the movie should be used to raise awareness for violence and discrimination towards women. Whether we like it or not it is prevalent and stuff that happens in the books does happen in real life. People want to ignore that.

Dark Knight Rises Prologue video (before it gets taken down)

It's flipped and still has a bit cut off, but this is the best quality of the three versions I have seen. I wish I could see it for real but my city isn't participating in the prologue screenings. Bastards.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

This movie was fantastic. I don't really know what else to say.

I was nervous and confused about Rooney Mara ever since I heard she had been cast and let me tell you, she was incredible. With the kinds of things she had to do in this film she really shined through it. I loved it because Mara was a little closer to the Lisbeth I got from the descriptions in the book. Noomi Rapace did great as well but I always perceived her as more passive and not as cold.

Daniel Craig gave Blomqvist an interesting contrast. He was serious and felt broken but at the heart of the character he was quite... nerdy? Him politely saying "goodbye" to Lisbeth's house guest was hilarious. His reaction to being shot at was a little quirky as well. It was a nice surprise. Although, I must say, Craig's accent annoyed the hell out of me. It went from being Swedish to an odd mixture of British and Swedish to flat out British at random. Very irritating. In comparison to Mara's flawless dialect it was real noticeable.

But overall I truly loved this film. It was, for me, closer to the book than the Swedish film was and certain parts were more intense. However, there was one major omission; Mikael didn't serve any jail time whatsoever. In the book he went to jail in the middle of his research and even in the Swedish version he went to jail. That disappointed me. I also felt like the actual research Mikael and Lisbeth did on Harriet wasn't as thorough as it should have been. Most of it felt a little rushed.

The musical score was incredible. I thought what Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross did for The Social Network was good, but what they have done for TGWTDT is even better. I also loved the subtle Nine Inch Nails tribute in the movie. I'll wait and see if anyone else catches it.

As soon as I hopped back on the Internets I saw the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises had been posted on Apple and about a thousand people ripped it and posted it on YouTube.

Woot.

Smart marketing but it sucks.

I would like to say I don't understand why they haven't officially posted the second Dark Knight Rises trailer online yet but I do understand. They are trying to make more money by selling movie tickets and forcing people to see Sherlock Holmes 2. Sherlock Holmes is stupid so therefore I still haven't seen anything but the shitty bootleg I saw last week. Even then I barely saw anything because the lighting sucked and half the screen was cut off.

So frustrating. Nolan is a genius but he sure pisses me off sometimes, same with Warner Bros..

Young Adult

Well, I have to say that Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman have done it again. Still didn't top Juno but this was a close second.

Charlize Theron's character, Mavis, was one of those that was so painful to watch but you couldn't look away. She is such a terrible person but oddly enough it works for her. She drinks too much, has practically no friends, and is still in love with her high school boyfriend after like 17 years of not being with him. Not to mention Mavis eventually married and then divorced.
I think the introduction to Mavis was one of the best I have ever seen. There is nothing like seeing a "successful" author watching reality shows to fall asleep, chugging Diet Coke first thing in the morning, and playing Wii Fit while her dog barks and is ignored at the back door. Like I said, it is so painful yet you can't look away. I found myself saying, "how depressing and embarrassing" about 20 times throughout the course of the whole film.

The character development left a little to be desired when it came to other characters, specifically Buddy. Buddy being Mavis' ex-boyfriend whom she returns to her hometown to win back despite the fact that he is married with a newborn daughter. I think Buddy was left a little open. He is portrayed as a nice guy who still has minor feelings for Mavis but then says his kindness is fueled only by his wife, Beth. Mavis then revolts against both Buddy and Beth at a ceremony for their daughter in front of the whole party. She reveals Buddy got her pregnant 17 years prior and she miscarried. It makes you feel, as a viewer, that she is just jealous of what Beth has with him because it could have been her.
Mavis also encounters an old classmate, Matt, who was brutally beaten by jocks in high school and was left permanently crippled. He tries to tell Mavis she is doing the wrong thing but she instead uses Matt as a drinking buddy and uses his disability to make herself feel like she is the one who is moving on with life instead of being stuck in the same place hating on people who hurt her. Matt wasn't terribly underdeveloped but they could have given him a little bit more. He was just a typical forgotten high school student who has remained ignored ever since.

Overall I thought the script was the high point. Diablo Cody gave her typical elements of dark humor but it wasn't as sarcastic as its been in the past. That is what I loved. It was a nice change and she is proving why she won an Oscar. Charlize Theron gave a fantastic performance, though. You cannot count her out in this equation. To me, she did a good job of showing how exhausting it is to be such a bitch all the time. You could see it in her physical appearance. She played a delusional woman quite well, too.

The only problem I had and my boyfriend felt the same way... the product placement was ridiculous. We see at exhaustion: Chili's, KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Diet Coke, Mini Cooper, Hampton Inn, Macy's, Blackberry, and Apple. It was ridiculous and I feel like I paid to see one big commercial. I was surprised not to see a Target given the film was set in Minnesota. There is a Target on every corner in that state.




But yeah, I recommend this one. It is a bit sad but it's true because we all know people like Mavis. 8/10

Natalie Portman spewing fire at Marvel over Thor 2

So apparently Natalie Portman is shooting fire at Marvel over the firing of Patty Jenkins, the director who was set to direct Thor 2. First off, Marvel is claiming they weren't happy with how "indecisive" Jenkins was proving to be and thought that she would cause the film to not meet its November 2013 release. It's only about halfway through December 2011 and Jenkins was only hired in October. November 2013 is a little less than two years away. Give me a fucking break. However, seems like if Portman wasn't contractually obligated to the project she would have already walked away due to this. She is expressing anger and irritability toward Marvel for this decision. Marvel is apparently working to smooth over the situation to keep Portman happy and is also involving her with the selection of a new director. Marvel is now also claiming that Jenkins was hired based on Portman's endorsement and enthusiasm in the first place and that the studio became uncomfortable with Jenkins during her involvement with screenwriter interviews and script reads.

I like Natalie Portman and all, but what makes her the star of the show to the point that she demands being involved in choosing a director and gets all pissy and threatening when a female director is released from a project? Just because she won the amount of awards for Black Swan and thinks she is hot shit? Bullshit. I understand wanting more women in the director's chair but I don't think that was Marvel's intention. Some people just aren't meant for certain projects, male or female. Not to mention the fact that none of Portman's previous roles have had a female director and for the most part have been quite successful, specifically Black Swan which was directed by Darren Aronofsky. One more film directed by a man won't hurt anyone or anything so she needs to shut up. She has no right in any way, shape, or form to personally hand pick who she wants to direct the film. That is the responsibility and job of the studio. Marvel is doing their job. They thought Jenkins wasn't going to work out so she was replaced. It happens and Portman should know that.
I personally think she is doing this on purpose to stall production. She has repeatedly stated that she didn't even know if she wanted to continue acting after giving birth to her son. What better way to do that than piss Marvel off and act like a child making the production 10x more difficult than it needs to be. Really low on her part, tbh, not to mention it's embarrassing. It makes her look like a spoiled brat.

The Dark Knight Rises 6-minute prologue leaked online!

With that said, I saw the leaked video last night. It wasn't that great in terms of quality but it was still exciting. It starts with Commissioner Gordon making some sort of speech about Harvey Dent and morphs into what looked like the Mayor boarding a plane. He was talking about Bane and wondering why he wears the mask. Bane turns around and starts talking about something and says he can't take off the mask. Another plane flies over them and the Mayor asks if his plan was to get caught and Bane says his next move was to crash the plane. It was hard to tell whether the people jumping out of the other plane were helping Bane or trying to stop him, but they blow up half of the plane, attach cables to it, and as Bane escapes the first plane drops and crashes to the ground. The whole time the chant-like theme that was at the end of the teaser plays.
The prologue ends with short clips, a lot of them hard to see because it's dark, but you see a glimpse of Catwoman with those damn goggles on and also the start of the police fight with all of the Arkham guys. It ends with Bane walking away carrying the broken Batman mask.

From what I could make out of the video it looked pretty awesome and I hope my description helps. I'll try and find another video and if I can I'll replace the link
There are also videos on YouTube, if they're still there today, of just the audio from the prologue. If nothing else you hear Bane's voice. The voice is quite interesting and I have no doubt it was all ADR.

EDIT:  It's not the Mayor. I thought it was because the first bootleg was such shitty quality. And I'm still trying to find another video of the prologue. Both that I found have been taken down.

I read this morning, and you can too, that the Cardinals traded their star 1st baseman Albert Pujols to the Los Angeles Angels. He signed a 10-year contract worth between $250 and $260 million dollars.

Holy shit.





Now what does this mean? The NL just had some weight lifted off their shoulders, specifically the NL Central, because Pujols will now be in the AL. Other than that it means the Cardinals are a bunch of idiots. If you have a good player who is also a decent fan favorite keep him around. I am laughing.

Christopher Nolan released the list of theaters participating in the Dark Knight Rises prologue screening before Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol... and there isn't a single theater in Colorado participating. Not only that but apparently there might be a new Dark Knight Rises trailer, along with a teaser for The Hobbit, before Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. I'm sure theaters here will do that but with one minor problem; I have absolutely no desire to see Sherlock Holmes.'ll

These two make amazing music. I can imagine the film and I haven't even seen it yet. I love it.

Coming to terms... maybe.

I started thinking about this Evil Dead remake bullshit and it got me thinking, who would I cast if I had the authority? Finding a new Ash is going to be a nightmare in reality and even in a dream it's rough. You can't replace Bruce Campbell but here goes...

Ash: I would go with someone a little lower on the Hollywood scale. Maybe not a total unknown but someone who isn't front page news 24/7. Maybe someone like Kyle Gallner, Aaron Johnson, Dave Franco, Darren Criss, or Jim Sturgess. Out of those I think Franco would be the best choice, as of right now. Ash is a badass but he is such a tender guy who means well.

Cheryl: Evan Rachel Wood, hands down. I would be real interested in what she could do with this one.

Linda: Jennifer Lawrence would be an interesting choice. So would Kristen Stewart, oddly enough. Main reason I mention Stewart... Linda gets her head chopped off, tee hee.

Scotty: Marshall Allman.

Shelly: Emily Browning, Scout Taylor-Compton, Emma Bell... Shelly is such a small character it doesn't even matter. 


I would choose younger people because that's how the first one was. Remember how young Bruce Campbell was? I think it's better to have a younger cast too because it will better accommodate the no doubt ridiculous dialogue Diablo Cody will present.
Still not happy about it but if it's going to happen then at least have a decent cast... ffs.
