The Purge franchise skipping a 2015 release

It seems Universal has decided against making The Purge an annual event. The studio released a statement that the next installment of The Purge won't appear until July 1, 2016. That puts it just before the Fourth of July so they will have a chance to make some decent money at the box office.

The Purge began back in 2013 and introduced us into the near future where the United States has created an annual "purge" where all crimes are legal for a 12-hour period. Those choosing to purge can rape, murder, stalk, hurt, burglarize, and more during the night to whomever they choose. The films have spawned Halloween Horror Nights mazes at Universal Studios parks as well as a road tour last summer.

The Purge 3 officially announced

After two very successful movies, Universal announced their intent to make a third film in The Purge franchise likely to be released in 2015. The film will once again be made by Universal, Platinum Dunes, and Blumhouse and James DeMonaco is returning to write and direct.

I personally didn't like The Purge as I felt the movie basically shit on a great concept, so as a result I didn't go see The Purge: Anarchy. However, I did read and hear from friends that it was a lot better than the first one. The announcement of a third film is really no surprise.
People online are already starting to throw concepts around hoping that this third installment will focus on something other than murder. Seeing that all crime is legal during a purge, hopefully with a third film they will start exploring how participants exercise other crimes to seek revenge and vengeance. Potentials could include robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping, stalking, etc..

The Purge: Breakout coming to your city?

Some US cities will be receiving a taste of what it would be like to be in The Purge this summer as a promotion for The Purge: Anarchy.

Producer Jason Blum announced that Blumhouse Productions and Universal is presenting The Purge: Breakout; a touring promo serving an interactive way to introduce fans to the world of The Purge. The setup will apparently "capture" guests prior to the event start and the guests will have to solve a series of puzzles to escape. Blum elaborated, "This experience allows fans across the county the chance to immerse themselves in the intricate world that the series' writer-director, James DeMonaco, has so painstakingly crafted. We hope that they enjoy being scared out of their minds."

The official synopsis of the event is posted on the website and is as follows:

The Purge: Breakout is an immersive horror escape experience traveling throughout the United States in the summer of 2014. In a first-of-its-kind activation, guests will have to solve puzzles and figure out clues to breakout and survive THE PURGE. Self contained in four semi-trucks, the escape experience is produced by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse. Based on popular escape and horror interactive events throughout Asia, The Purge: Breakout will give fans a chance to experience all the fun of an escape while getting a taste of the world shown through the film series THE PURGE.

I would assume this is why the release date for The Purge: Anarchy was delayed. This was probably in the works and instead of doing another Halloween Horror Nights thing at Universal Studios, why not take it out on the road?

Second trailer for The Purge: Anarchy

I will admit it looks more interesting with a full look, but I am still going to pass. Originally set for release in June, the new release date for The Purge: Anarchy is July 18th.

The Purge: Anarchy delayed by Universal

Universal's upcoming release, The Purge: Anarchy, has received almost a full month delay from June 20th to July 18th. This is an attempt to avoid some box office competition as the film was originally set to face-off against Think Like a Man Too and Jersey Boys. It will now compete with Jupiter Ascending and Disney's Planes: Fire and Rescue.

I often wonder if these release shifts are even worth it in the end given the amount of money it takes to reprint posters, re-edit trailers, etc.. But whatever. It seems to be the way of things now.

I just don't see the point. The Purge sucked and this looks like it will, too. Sorry.
I can appreciate that they will actually show what it's like outside during The Purge, but I just can't get interested.

The Purge: Anarchy trailer hits tomorrow

Universal is set to release the first trailer for The Purge: Anarchy, the fast-tracked sequel to The Purge. This sequel will be released in theaters on June 20th. We don't really have much info on this sequel, but they did give us a teaser photo.

The Purge: Anarchy stars Frank Grillo, Michael K. Williams, Zach Gifford, and Carmen Ejogo.
