Kick-Ass 2 - Review

Dave continues as Kick-Ass by joining a group of inspired citizen heroes only to find out that attempting to be both a superhero and a teenager might give more than he bargained for in Kick-Ass 2.


I have been excited for Kick-Ass 2 since I heard it was actually going to happen, so going in I was really pumped. All the characters were back, except for Evan Peters, and the trailer looked great. However, I couldn't help but notice the awful reception it got this weekend. But, I decided to stick it out and go see the movie anyway and I must say that I don't know why this movie has received such a bad wrap. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a Kick-Ass fan. Seriously, this isn't a bad movie.

I will admit that at times the pacing was a bit weird and although it pretty much picked up right where the first one left off, they did blow past a lot of stuff. The world's perception of the superheroes was to be expected and it was as Dave (aka, Kick-Ass) mentioned at the end of the first movie. There were new citizen heroes to carry Kick-Ass' torch.
However, anyone who liked Kick-Ass will like Kick-Ass 2. It has the same overall feel for the most part. There are things that were a bit over the top, like Mindy's revenge on the high school bitches, but it didn't ruin anything. The weakest aspect of this movie was by far The Motherfucker but I think that all comes down to casting. Christopher Mintz-Plasse shouldn't have been cast as Chris D'Amico in the first place, so in a way you can't blame the character. It's a simple case of miscasting, imo. Face it... the kid will always be McLovin. It just doesn't work.
As far as all the other heroes go, I really enjoyed them. My favorites aside from Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl were Colonel Stars and Stripes and Tommy's mom and dad. They brought a new, fresh feel to the world of the citizen hero and were genuine people devoting their own time to try and make the city and the world a better place. Todd and Marty becoming heroes was a little silly because they simply did it to try and be cool or to fit in with Dave.
I think the strongest character in this was by far Hit-Girl. It was said prior to the release that this sequel was more her movie and I agree with that. I wouldn't really call Dave the main character in this one. I think he took a bit of a backseat to Mindy for a majority of the movie and that worked. She is a great character and it was nice to see her realize who she really is as both a person and a hero. I thought Chloe Moretz did a great job, too.

Overall I would give this a big thumbs up for effort. It is definitely entertaining and funny and it gives Kick-Ass fans another good ride. I don't quite understand why the critics gave this one so much crap, but there always has to be a scapegoat at the box office. I feel like everyone who reviewed this movie negatively either didn't see the first one or saw it and didn't understand it. I enjoyed the hell out of Kick-Ass 2 and I think anyone who liked the first one would too.

SDCC: Kick-Ass 2: Extended NSFW Trailer Premieres

We have a new, extended trailer for Kick-Ass 2 straight from Comic-Con in San Diego. It is branded NSFW primarily due to violence and language, but other than that it's good to go. I personally think it is a bit too long and it probably showed a majority of cool stuff in the movie, but that is pretty much what trailers do these days.

Jim Carrey refuses to support Kick-Ass 2

In light of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, Jim Carrey has refused to do any promotional press for his upcoming movie Kick-Ass 2. Carrey vented on Twitter saying "I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence." He continued on with, "I meant to say my apologies to others involved with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart."

Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar's response wasn't as sympathetic:

"As you may know, Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I'm baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn't in the screenplay eighteen months ago. ... Like Jim, I'm horrified by real-life violence (even though I'm Scottish), but Kick-Ass 2 isn't a documentary. No actors were harmed in the making of this production! This is fiction and like Tarantino and Peckinpah, Scorcese and Eastwood, John Boorman, Oliver Stone and Chan-Wook Park, Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless body-count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence, whether it's the ramifications for friends and family or, as we saw in the first movie, Kick-Ass spending six months in hospital after his first street altercation. Ironically, Jim's character in Kick-Ass 2 is a Born-Again Christian and the big deal we made of the fact that he refuses to fire a gun is something he told us attracted him to the role in the first place. Ultimately, this is his decision, but I've never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real-life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real-life. ... Jim, I love ya and I hope you reconsider for all the above points. You're amazing in this insanely fun picture and I'm very proud of what Jeff, Matthew and all the team have done here."

This is an interesting one. That is for sure.

Kick-Ass 2 and The Hobbit 2 both pushed back

Well this is sad news.

Kick-Ass 2 and The Hobbit: There and Back Again have had their release dates pushed back. Kick-Ass was originally slated for June 28, 2013 and will now be released on August 16, 2013. The Hobbit's original release was set to be July 18, 2014 but it will now be released on December 17, 2014.
The moves seem to be all about competition. It appears they didn't want The Hobbit in direct competition with X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy so they moved it. However there are three big name movies that are set for December 2014 like Tomorrowland, the new Annie remake, Night at the Museum 3, and Minions.
The shift of Kick-Ass 2 now puts it on the same weekend as Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and The To-Do List. Previously it was set to compete against The Heat and White House Down.


Personally, I am sick of all these release date shifts. I already got shit on by Hollywood when they moved Carrie and The Great Gatsby.

First official Kick-Ass 2 image debuts via EW

We have our first official image for Kick-Ass 2 featuring Aaron Johnson as Kick-Ass and Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars . The Colonel is accompanied by his dog Stripes and he leads the superhero crime-fighters called Justice Forever.

Kick-Ass 2 also features returning actors Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Newcomers include Donald Faison and Clark Duke. It is set to hit theaters on June 28, 2013.

 After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.

Olga Kurkulina cast in Kick-Ass 2

Olga Kurkulina has been officially cast in the role of Mother Russia in the upcoming film, Kick-Ass 2. Mother Russia serves as a bodyguard for Red Mist, played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Production for the film also began today in Toronto. 

Jim Carrey confirmed for Kick-Ass 2

It has been confirmed that Jim Carrey will star in Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall as The Colonel. Director Jeff Wadlow shared the news on Twitter just 6-days prior to filming.

Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall hits theaters on June 28, 2013 and has Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse all returning.

Kick-Ass 2 has a release date

Kick-Ass 2 has received a release date for June 28, 2013 which puts it at a little less than a year away.

Universal also updated a release for Jurassic Park 3D. The re-release will now be in theaters on April 5, 2013 instead of July 19th.

In other casting news for Kick-Ass 2, Donald Faison (Scrubs, Clueless) has been confirmed to play the role of Doctor Gravity. Doctor Gravity is an ally of Kick-Ass.

John Leguizamo joins Kick-Ass 2

It has been announced that none other than John Leguizamo will play the role of a bodyguard to Red Mist in the upcoming Kick-Ass sequel, Kick-Ass 2. Christopher Mintz-Plasse will reprise his role as Red Mist along with Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass and Hit Girl). It is also rumored that Nicolas Cage will make a cameo at some point.

Red Mist will be playing one villain in the film while the other will be Mother Russia. Mother Russia has not been cast yet but rumors were circulating around Gina Carano so we will just have to wait and see.

Universal close to deals for Kick-Ass 2

Despite rumors circulating of re-casting it has been announced that Universal is close to landing deals with Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Chloe Moretz for Kick-Ass 2. Evidently the reason this has become such an issue is because all the actors in the first movie (made by Lionsgate) didn't have sequel clauses in their contracts so Universal basically has to start over with the sequel.

I'm excited for Kick-Ass 2 so hopefully everything goes according to plan and they can get everyone who needs to come back on the project. To have continuity they would also have to try and get back Evan Peters (Todd), Lyndsy Fonseca (Katie), Clark Duke (Marty), and Omari Hardwick (Marcus).

Hit-Girl trouble for Kick-Ass 2?

I was excited to hear that Kick-Ass 2 had finally received a green light and was going to actually be made, but I hadn't thought of all the things that go with it. The main thing being the casting. It's all well and good to assume that everyone who should be back would be but I forgot how popular and sought after Chloe Moretz has become since playing Hit-Girl in the first Kick-Ass.

I saw an article on Collider that basically lays it out...

1. Chloe Moretz has signed on to play Carrie in the upcoming remake which begins shooting this August. She has also signed on to play a lead role in an upcoming zombie film titled Maggie. She also is playing a supporting role in a film called The Drummer. This wasn't mentioned in the article, but we also must not forget that she signed on to play Emily the Strange like a year ago so who knows when that is going to start production, if ever.

2. Hit-Girl has a smaller part in the second book but writer Jeff Wadlow expanded the character for the movie script.

In other words, if they want Chloe Moretz to return the production will have to work to accommodate her schedule. In my opinion they can't make this movie without Chloe. She is Hit-Girl and if they tried to be bold enough and recast the role no one would see it, including me.
