Alexandre Desplat to score Star Wars: Rogue One

Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat has landed the job of scoring the first Star Wars spin-off film. Desplat will score Gareth Edwards' Star Wars: Rogue One and will be the first composer aside from John Williams to score a Star Wars film.

Desplat had a very busy 2014 and created scores for The Grand Budapest Hotel, Unbroken, Godzilla, The Imitation Game, and Monuments Men. The Grand Budapest Hotel won him an Oscar this year and he was nominated for The Imitation Game. He's also been nominated for Best Original Score for Philomena, Argo, The King's Speech, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and The Queen. I think he's a great addition to the Star Wars universe, but I am nervous that it won't have the same feel that John Williams brings to these films.

Michael Giacchino will score Jurassic World

We have heard scores from Michael Giacchino in movies like Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Up, Lost, and The Incredibles and we will next hear him in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Giacchino has now been given the task to score Jurassic World.

Jurassic Park and the sequel, The Lost World, were scored by John Williams and the theme is probably one of the best recognized in the film industry. The third installment was scored by Don Davis and we will now have a third composer to tackle the franchise. Giacchino has been a longtime partner of J.J. Abrams but has scored just about everything. He even did compositions for the Jurassic Park: The Lost World video game back in the day so he isn't really a total stranger to this franchise.

I would have loved to have John Williams come back and do one more but you can't have it all. Jurassic World opens in theaters on June 12, 2015.

John Williams to score Star Wars: Episode VII

After some speculation and rumors, we now have confirmation that composer John Williams will return to the Star Wars franchise to score Episode VII. This shows J.J. Abrams making a bold move as he is breaking apart from his frequent composer Michael Giacchino who has scored all of Abrams' previous films.

Williams scored all six of the previous Star Wars films and has made some of the most iconic and memorable music in recent film history including scores for Jurassic Park, Superman, Indiana Jones, and the Harry Potter franchise. His return to Star Wars, at the age of 81, is a pretty big deal.

Good to have you back, Mr. Williams!

John Williams hopes to score new Star Wars films

Well... at least we finally have a potential positive about this whole Star Wars situation.

John Williams (Star Wars I-VI, Jurassic Park, Superman, etc.) is hoping to return and score the new Star Wars films Disney is rolling forward. However, speculation is high due to Abrams' long history with composer Michael Giacchino (Lost, Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek). However, Giacchino has also had a decent hand in composing for Disney films. His Disney resume includes scores for John Carter, La Luna, Cars 2, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue (the Disney Parks ride), Up, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles. Giacchino has also won an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for his score to Up.

Now with that said, I wouldn't mind terribly if Giacchino composed the music for the future Star Wars films but it also isn't confirmed that J.J. Abrams is going to do more with Star Wars than just Episode VII. I think if Abrams walked after Episode VII that Giacchino probably would as well which leaves another new director with a new composer. I would much rather have John Williams. He scored all six Star Wars films, he knows the cues, he knows the story through the music, and he could take it to new heights regardless of who he is working with. The only downside is that Williams is currently 81-years old. My fingers are crossed.
