Underworld reboot in the works at Lakeshore Entertainment

Lakeshore Entertainment is in the process of a reboot of the 2003 vampire/werewolf story, Underworld. The movie spawned a franchise with a total of four movies with the last release just being in 2012. Back in March there were reports that Screen Gems had commissioned a script titled Underworld: Next Generation, but nothing has really come of it yet. Kate Beckinsale mentioned in interviews that it was unlikely for her to do another Underworld film, but that it was possible for them to do more films without her.
It was assumed, given the title of the script, that they were moving on from Beckinsale's character, Selene, and focus on her vampire/werewolf hybrid daughter, Eve. There is no telling if this is truly going to be a reboot of Underworld or if it will just be a new set of movies, but either way there is more Underworld on the way.

Universal acquires The Vampire Chronicles

Prepare yourselves for a reboot of Interview with the Vampire.

Universal announced that they have acquired the rights to Anne Rice's classic series, The Vampire Chronicles. The acquisition went to Image Entertainment and Brian Grazer. The rights include all existing novels and any future novels Rice releases. It even includes the screenplay for Tale of the Body Thief written by Rice's son, Christopher Rice. Interview with the Vampire and Prince Lestat were also included in the acquisition.
On board to produce anything that comes of this is Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman (of course) and the President of Imagine Entertainment, Erica Huggins, will oversee production.

We have seen film adaptations of Anne Rice's novels already with the most notable being the 1994 adaptation of Interview with the Vampire. The film starred Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Kirsten Dunst and is considered a vampire cult favorite to this day. We also saw Queen of the Damned in 2002 which was based off the novel of the same name as well as "The Vampire Lestat." Rice has publicly expressed her dislike of the Queen of the Damned film stating that filmmakers mutilated her work.
Rice has also delved into television as well writing the 2001 Showtime series, The Feast of All Saints, and the 1997 CBS pilot, Rag and Bone. NBC had announced in 2002 that they wanted to adapt the "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" book trilogy for television, but it never went into production.

Personally, I have always loved Anne Rice novels and have read a lot of them. I liked Interview with the Vampire but I absolutely hated Queen of the Damned. The soundtrack was the best part of that movie. I am trying to be open to more Vampire Chronicles films, but I just can't jump on. Some things should just be left alone.

True Blood renewed for seventh season

HBO has chosen to renew their hit vampire drama True Blood for a seventh season. The sixth season is currently underway and, in my opinion, is as lackluster as the past 3 seasons have been. This is the first season where creator Alan Ball has not been the showrunner. 
Season 7 will air next summer on HBO most likely in early to mid June.

HBO releases True Blood coffee table book

HBO has released a True Blood art book. It features 40 pages of the "steamiest stills and hottest poster art" up until this point. Available in hardback, it features 40 removable poster pages as well. It features photos of characters such as Sookie Stackhouse, Eric Northman, and Bill Compton as if that wasn't obvious enough.
It retails for $24.99 and can be picked up on the HBO store website. It's also available in paperback via Amazon for a lot cheaper ($16.98).

True Blood Season 6 gets a premiere date

The sixth season of True Blood has an official release date! The vampires, fairies, werewolves, shape shifters, and whoever the fuck else will be back on HBO on Sunday, June 16th. This will mark the first season of the show without Alan Ball and it is also the first season to only have 10 episodes. The previous 5 seasons have all had 12 episodes.


I personally am growing tired of True Blood. The plot lines and characters are ridiculous at this point and I honestly don't even care anymore. The show has pretty much been shit since Season 3, but I have kept watching in hopes that something good will happen again. So far my wish hasn't come true. If Season 6 is just as bad I think I might quit watching. I've grown weary.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - Review

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter follows our 16th president on his journey from a young boy to a vampire hunter to one of the most historically recognized presidents in American history.


I went into this movie really excited because I enjoyed the book by Seth Grahame-Smith and the fact that Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov were involved. The casting for me wasn't too exciting because I didn't really know Benjamin Walker, I'm not necessarily a huge fan of Dominic Cooper, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was just Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim to me. Even with that I was still pretty pumped.

However... I walked away extremely disappointed. The pacing was all over the place, the acting was vague, and despite Seth Grahame-Smith writing the screenplay I thought it drowned in comparison to the book. Granted the book wasn't a masterpiece but it was a lot more enjoyable.

Lionsgate planning to remake Twilight

Rumored as of right now but knowing Lionsgate this is most likely true. According to Bloody-Disgusting, which you can honestly take or leave, Lionsgate is planning to either continue the Twilight saga beyond Breaking Dawn or remake it altogether.

I want to reiterate... this is just a rumor as of right now. There is no confirmation on this and no discussion outside of websites like this and people. With that said, this conversation in itself doesn't surprise me at all. Lionsgate already has said that they hope to continue Twilight after Breaking Dawn Part 2 because it is such a huge money maker. I said it then and I am still saying it now, I hope Stephenie Meyer has a way to stop this from happening. I hope their is some kind of clause or whatever that gives her the ultimate decision of what to do with these characters. I cannot handle more of this Twilight shit. I have been looking forward to 2012 since New Moon came out because I knew it would finally be over.

However, if this is going to happen there is only one way I would accept it... if they made it into a TV show. TV shows are so easy to avoid but they have the incredible potential to be popular and make a very decent amount of money. Look at the fanbase for shows like True Blood, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Vampire Diaries, Big Bang Theory, etc.. TV Shows can have a huge impact and enough people know about Twilight so it wouldn't necessarily curse it to fading out completely and it would give fans consistency. They also would have more room to do things correctly in terms of the books and they would have more time to expand on certain things that the movies haven't allowed. Seeing that this franchise has become so popular and is worth so much money I can't think of a single network that would pass on the opportunity.


So yeah. This isn't a surprise and I do agree with Bloody-Disgusting in saying that this will happen but damn it... I don't want it to. I fucking hate Lionsgate.

 
[UPDATE] Apparently Summit Entertainment did some damage control with Deadline and claimed the rumors of the reboot are untrue.

"We are not remaking Twilight. We will happily support Stephenie Meyer if she decides to proceed in any way. But this will be the last one unless that should change."

I think this is just what I said above. This is damage control. I have no doubt they have plans set in motion so they can act quickly if Meyer does give approval or dishes out some new material. They would be stupid not to say this.

Dark Shadows - Review

Tim Burton's newest film, Dark Shadows, follows a 200+ year old vampire named Barnabas Collins as he awakens in 1972 after being cursed in the late 1700's. He awakens to find his family fortune and mansion in danger along with finding their dysfunction.


I have been excited for Dark Shadows for many, many months and waited quite patiently for the trailers and promo photos. If you read my blog regularly you might have noticed. With that said it is no surprise that I dragged my sick self out of bed to see it opening weekend. I am happy to say that I wasn't disappointed at all.
I honestly think this is the best Tim Burton film since Sweeney Todd in 2007. It was definitely better than Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. That's for damn sure. The cast was fantastic, the scenery was nice, the setting surprisingly fit the scenario. The previews are kind of misleading but at the same time they do it justice. There is a decent amount of humor in the film but it is a lot darker than the previews are making it seem. I anticipated that going in and I'm glad I was correct. Keeping that in mind, I felt kind of bad for the people who brought their young kids to the theater with them. It's not extremely adult but there is a noticeable amount of adult humor and situations. Examples being Barnabas having destructive vampire sex and the youngest boy mocking his cousin at the dinner table about touching herself. Seeing that Barnabas is a vampire there is a decent amount of blood as well.
Overall I think it was well done. There were parts where it dragged a little bit and got a little boring but it was brief. The last 20 minutes or so had the best stuff in it but the lead into it was good enough. Like I said, this was by far my favorite Burton film I have seen in a while. I'm happy.


Now for spoilers. If you haven't seen Dark Shadows and you want to I would suggest not looking at these. Unless you are a honey badger and just don't give a shit.
























First of all, let me just say that Chloe Moretz is one fucking badass girl. The twist of her being a werewolf was actually pretty fun for me. I liked how they tied the witch into the Collins family curse by including her cursing the children into being "monsters" like Barnabas. Carolyn turned out to be a werewolf and David could see ghosts.
I also liked that Barnabas was a badass vampire who killed and hissed in the sun. The part when he got set on fire and didn't realize it was hilarious. His old fashioned speech and persona was hilarious, too. Especially when he basically called Carolyn a hooker.
Loved Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter. Both of their characters were great.

Underworld: Awakening

Yes... I saw the fourth Underworld film this past Friday, January 20th, in 3D.

I must start off by saying I am a huge fan of the Underworld films. Well, I am a fan of 2 of the 3. Personally I think Rise of the Lycans was a huge mistake but that isn't the point.

As far as Underworld: Awakening goes, I absolutely loved it. I thought the plot had a good direction and although you could tell it would most likely have a 5th movie coming after it they didn't leave us with a terrible cliffhanger or conclusion. It was great to have Selene back and I appreciated what they did with Subject #2. (Spoiler alert, the girl is Selene and Michael's daughter. As if anyone who has seen these movies couldn't decipher that from the trailers.)

But with almost every movie there is some criticism to be given. And yes, there will be spoilers with one of these.

1. How exactly did they get Selene's daughter with Selene having no memory of having a daughter? Unless vampires are harvested some other way we don't know about she would have been pregnant and from the looks of it, when she was captured along with Michael she was most certainly not visibly pregnant. I was disappointed that we found out nothing about how the daughter even came into play. They just fast forwarded 12 years into the future and told us Selene had a daughter with Michael.

2. The 3D was a mistake. It was dark, the light that did exist was in a strobe effect practically the whole movie, and the silver nitrate particles used to fight off the Lycans was distracting as hell. It clouded the whole picture too much. My recommendation... if you have a theater playing this movie in 2D choose that over the 3D. It really sucks ass.

3. They could only give us 88 minutes? The movie was good but it was way too short. They could have easily squeezed in 15-20 more minutes without putting a damper on anything.


Other than that, it is a great film for fellow Underworld and/or horror fans. Selene is back with a vengeance and I fucking loved it.
